Message:
Okay I own a 2000 CC 4x4 5spd w/ 3.92. I have a Airaid intake and a custom 3 inch exhaust, Jet chip stage 2, and a 180 tstat. Everyday on this post I hear a NEW STORY. This makes no power, this makes lots of power! Which works. Lets make this thread the end all post.

Which intake works, and makes power gains?

Which catback exhaust makes a power gain?
Low End or top end?

Is it possible to gain low end on a 4.7L?

Should I even consider buying headers?

Why buy a supercharger if it wont work in 5th gear autos due to lean conditions?

What chip makes power?

I am just frustrated, we all want to get down the track faster or crest that hill faster or tow better. Lets all work together and try to make some power. I am going to start over with my motor and make it stock again because it has no low end torque, and as far as I am concerned a weak top end. I love my Dakota to death and I have faith in this motor. Please lets make a list of what makes power. The chip works for some not others, why? LETS SOLVE THESE DISCREPANCIES.

SORRY FOR THE LONG POST

I might be able to help a little. Check out my web page. It seems like all I do is research this engine. I have seen more dyno charts and track slips than I can count. I am doing all of this research because we want our True Cold Air intake to actually gain power over stock - not just claim it. On my web site look at the mods page. It shows why I chose each mod including installation instructions. I dont have any dyno charts or track times posted because we are trying to keep it to ourselves until we get the testing done on our intake tube.

Here is what I've found according to other peoples dyno charts and track slips:
* Single 3" Flowmaster or Gibson are the only cat back systems showing a gain in power. The gain is usually only 1 hp though. Even though the dyno shows a gain in power some are reporting up to 3 tenths slower in the 1/4. Custom systems are usually showing a loss in power.
* Most air intake systems are showing a general loss in power. Usually the filter is undersized and it does no good when you are pulling warm air in from the engine compartment. Most claim to be cold air and they are not even close. Also, they make a lot of noise and it makes people believe that they are getting more power (same with exhaust). This is why I've been researching and testing our true cold air intake so much. We want to be positive that it does give good gains over stock. (this may be ths same reason the K&N Gen II is taking so long). The only thing that I can disclose so far is we are seeing a 1-2 mpg increase.
* I dont think that my 180 degree thermostat gained any power but it does seem to have quicker throttle response.

I think the stock PCM is the big limiting factor. I believe that a performance PCM will give these mods a chance to actually make power.

So Cyber Wolf, you're saying that the deciding factor is to replace the PCM? Which one would you go with? Is Mopar any good?

The Mopar PCM is excellent but they don't have one out for the 2001 4.7, I'm not sure about the 2000. Mike Leach can custom flash your PCM for you which is ideal but I'm not sure if he can flash the 2001 yet. I haven't researched these very much yet. I've been focused on researching intake and exhaust.

Cool. That sounds kind of expensive for a chip though. Any track times or dyno charts to prove the gains? Does it matter if it is an auto or 5 speed?

Get a life! If your serious about putting together a rig that will be fast loose the stupid 4x4. The 4.7 is a fast engine in 2wd's. The 4.7 is a highend power engine. You can stengthen your lowend but if you want a good engine for 4x4 you want lots of lowend wich is not the 4.7. jat

The same way you would do it on a car.

By the way isnt one of the worlds fastest cars AWD. Lamborgihine Diablo

4wd or 2wd doesnt make a diffrence. What we are out to do is make power.

First thing i would do is K&N or supercharger. Then PCM then exhaust. That is about all you can do with out ripping up the engine and changing parts.

Hey I recently put on an AIRAID intake on my 2001 Dakota 5.9 R/T and noticed what that dude said about how its no good to put one on if its sucking in warm air. Would a cool air dam help any to block the heat from the side nearest closest to the engine? Cuz I noticed that the side closest to the fenderwell is not even warm.

I also just put on a POWERAID Throttle body spacer and noticed it helped a little in the 2-1/2 and 3000 RPM range but whistles like a bltch. Anybody else have any comments on that.

And do they make a chip or Power Programmer for the 2001 R/T's yet?

Regarding the chip, I have a Jet Chip Stage II in my 2001 R/T and don't bother. It really didn't make a difference in power, if it did I can't notice. I would try the $40 IAT first before spending the money on a chip.

The throttle body spacer isn't supposed to work on the 5.9L, and only helps a little on the others.

Yes, but something between the engine and your filter. Not only will it stay cooler but cleaner.

Hey R/Truck...what is the IAT U were talking about, what does it do, and where can I get one and how big of difference does it make.

I've also looked around some websites and people adding 160 degree thermostats to their rides to make the engine cooler. Well I called up a place like Napa and the dude was freaking out asking me why I wanted to put one on my new truck saying my computer would mess up thinking it still had the stock thermostat in it. I also talked to a guy who had an old Fairlane he restored and put one in his and said in the winter his engine would barely warm up enough to keep the windsheild defrosted let alone keep him warm. So is putting a new 160 thermostat in a bad idea?

Also I'm trying to think of every way I can get my HP up to around 290 or 300 HP w/o having to pay for an expensive supercharger. What are some suggestions...I've already added air intake, TBS, and exhaust. I think it should be up to 270 HP now. People are saying that the chips don't show any real signs of improvement. Only thing I can think that are left are maybe to add new headers, new ignition...anything else I can do?
