Oh, by the way mine is an a518 which I'm 99% sure yours is. The a500 is mainly used behind the V6.

i also have a 1994 Dakota 4X4 with the 5.2 and an automatic, that just recently lost reverse completely. It drives just fine in all the other gears, shifts well with no slippage. The problem I am having is trying to figure out what trans is in it. The body tag is gone, and the only numbers I have found on the transmission itself are off of a lip just above the trans pan on the drivers side stamped into the housing. they are PK52118326 1976 1372. any help identifying this transmission would be greatly appreciated.

On a '94, whichever model, it'll be an RH. The RE started in 1996.

heres a lesson. i have the 46rh/42rh manual which explains it all.
46RH/E- 4= foward speeds 6= torque handling rating R= i forgot h= hydraulically operated / E= electronically operated
why... oh why would you think a 44RE can handle more torque than a 46RH/E? more clutch disks usually means it can handle more? so it must not have more clutch disks. im sure im correct but someone is welcome to straighten me out.
oh yea. the 46RE/42RE was introduced in 96 when dakotas switched to the OBDII system blah blah.

That swap should work... Both trucks use the 46RE. It's real easy to tell the difference between the 518/46RE and the 500/42RE/44RE. The 500 has a pan that's almost square as opposed to the 518 which has a pan that's the same shape, with the exception of an ear that sticks out just under the dipstick tube. By the way, the 46/RH-46/RE was also optional behind the 5.2... not just the 5.9

Holly!

I know what you going though. My tranny lost reverse back in the summer. It's been rebuilt but I recomend getting a new one installed. I should have done that with the millage on my '94 truck. (265K)

Its a 518 (46RH) and if I could; I would have installed a 44RH transmission. tighter gear ratios are great on a 4x4.

I just bought a 91 2wd Dakota with a 5.2 liter, it has a bad automatic trans (loses drive and reverse when warm). I have access to a low mileage automatic transmission from a 93 2wd Dakota, but it is behind a v6. Will it fit? I am new to Dakotas, but have been a mopar nut all my life. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Bud
