Message: Get the manual trans because the engine responds better with some RPM. I have a 2000 Dakota RC and love it. The best mileage was 21mpg but I was taking it easy that week on the back roads. The worst mileage was 16mpg to 17mpg with a heavy foot. I usually average between 18mpg and 19mpg on the highway because I have 3.92 gears in the rear. The only problem I have encountered is that when the engine is warming up, its idle like to jump up and down. Just keep an eye on that. If you plan to add the HO cams, it is time consuming to move everything out of the way to put them in so plan on a weekend project, and becareful not to break anything. After all this, I would still recommend the 4.7 for you because you will love the power with a manual trans.

Other than that, the 5spd. manual is very cool on the 4.7.
If you don't dump the clutch you shouldn't ever have a serious problem. Other than wheel hop, but that kinda says something good.

I have a 2002 4x4 auto and love the truck. It has great power, and can easily add even more. Gas is almost the same a 3.9. It would be a great step up from the v6.

Message: Wish my 4.7 got that mileage you guys are talking about. I'm getting 13.5 in town (mostly stop and go during rush hour). I've only taken one trip out of town with the Dak. I got 13.9 mpg on the way to my destination, but that was driving 80 mph and into a 15-20 mph headwind. By the time I got back home, the average mpg had jumped up to 14.9 due to slowing down a little (75 mph) and a slight tailwind coming home. So I'm thinking normal conditions at 75 mph would put me at aboout 16 mpg. Should that be the mileage I expect with a 4WD QC?
I have an automatic, and personally I like it. My last SUV was a 5-speed and I hated it for rush hour driving. I have more acceleration than I'll ever need. No problems getting up to 75 on the hwy on ramps without putting the pedal all the way down.
As of right now, I'd buy another one.

Message: WOW!
I've been keeping track of my mileage since putting the H.O. Cams in last month and I've been averaging about 16mpg around town and 23mpg on the highway. Keep in mind that around town I've been using 4x4 a lot because of the 3 feet of snow we have that won't stop falling so I'm okay with the mileage at this point. I was getting better mileage both in town and on the highway during the summer months before the H.O. Cam install. Interesting to see what this summer brings.

Message: its been a proven fact if you have identical vehicals, one using an automatic and another using a manual the manual will always win due to the lack of loss of hp needing to utilize the tranny of the automatic, (automatic will take away 35% of overall hp at crank to make power to rear wheels) the only time an automatic would win over a manual is if a turbo was being used in both vehicals, due to an automatic being able to keep a steady boost threw the whole start and finish of a race, while a manual has to continuously rev to keep boost built up to make power for the car. every shift is a loss of power over the advantage of the automatic

manual benifit vs auto benefit
That can only be decided by the specific buyer.
I personally find the manual much more fun. If I built a 68 Firebird 455, would I be running a manual, hell no.
For those of you who just use your truck to make quarter mile passes all day, I say go for the auto! For the other 99.89456% (real world calculation) of the Dakota owners out there, get what suits you more.

And here in Houston, the traffic don't get much worse, and I have NO PROBLEM driving, even stop and go traffic! For 10 more stock HP, heavier, worse MPG, and only an auto, I COULDN'T bring myself to get the 5.9!

Message: Nah, I love my manual and wouldn't ever trade it for an auto. If I was that much of an auto person I would have a Ram 1500 RC 2WD 5.7L in front of my house already ;)
I test drove an auto 3.9 vs manual 3.9 (both 4x4 and ext. cabs) and liked the manual much more. I just thought a 4.7 might make it a lot more fun. So I chose that when I went to order.
Never got to test drive an R/T though. No one had one. Just recently a dealer up here got one. Now there is snow outside and they are fuked if they think they can sell it.
I did get to test drive a 4.7L auto quad and that thing was nice, but a tad out of my price range.

Message: I really like my 2001 QC with 4.7 and automatic. I do not know what they are like with a stick. I would imagine that I would have liked it even better with a stick. The wife really wanted an automatic. I have no complaints about the power train really. The only thing I would really like to see is variable valve timeing. THe truck makes plenty of power and gets slightly better miliage then the 3.9 V6. I would not have bought this Dodge without the 4.7. I am biased towards more m modern engine designs and hate hydralic lifters. I talked to quite a few enginers that worked on the project and they all gave me a thumbs up. Most of them no longer work there. It is the most refined engine that Dodge has ever put in a truck and the lower end is very stiff! So far 2001+ the engine has not had a single mechanical TSB! No leaking gaskets, no overheating issues, I think all the trany problems to date have been solved with programing. I crashed mine at 55MPH into another vechile and it protected my very well. $8054 dollars later and it will be good as new. I should get it back the 6th of Jan.

Still, don't see what the big deal is in traffic, stop and go, with my manual tranny. I know it shifts less than an auto would shift going stop and go, not that that matters though.
You like an auto, fine. It just seems that there are people with the 'Oh, a manual is a pain in traffic' attitude that wished they really had a manual, or they wouldn't even be commenting on it!
If you like your auto-fine. Just plz stop trying to rationalize why a manual might not be as good as what you have.
