Subject: 4.7L Oil Pressure Buildup
IP: Logged

Message:
I just noticed the other day that when I start my 2002 4.7L the oil pressure gauge comes up to the first white line and pauses for 3-4 seconds. It then continues upward. It happens when the engine is cold, warm, and hot. Is this normal?

Mine does the same thing, its a 2001 4.7. The oil level is fine, I check it weekly.

My 2000 4.7 does the same. Shoots up fast at start-up, pauses, then goes up the rest of the way a little slower.

My oil level is fine. Sounds like this is a "feature" of the 4.7L. Would be interesting to know what characteristic of the engine design causes this to happen.

The 4.7L V8 hemi has a hi-tech oiling system. The oil-pump is a special design and is driven directly off of the crank. (there is no ignition distributer in this engine!) There is also hollow camshafts that distribute the oil to half of the cam lobes.

Might I suggest that the "pause" in the pressure buildup is due to the hollow camshafts "filling up" with oil.

I have read the BOB from cover-to-cover and suggest you do the same. (Big Orange Book = 2000 factory service manual)

My '01 4.7 pressure gauge seems accurate... When I first strat up it goes to the white line before the high side and then after it warms up the needle moves depending on how fast I'm going... Idle = about in the middle 65mph (about 1800 - 2000 rpms) needle is at white line before High.

When I had my Ford Ranger the oil pressure gauge would always read "high" the needle would NEVER move after the engine was started.

What would occure if the oil filter would be completely clogged? Basicly is there an internal or external bypass to the oil filter? What damage would occur if any?

hmm...high oil pressure is good but low is not i wouldn't be worring that much about the high oil pressure reading that should tell you that dodge makes good motors

I have the same engine in my '02 QC Ram. If the temp is below 25°F, it takes 10-15 sec for oil pressure to build however only on a cold start. (and Yes, its cold up here in Buffalo, NY) The "Check Gauge" Lite comes on after starting during the period of No oil PSI. I made my dealer aware of this problem last winter, however they stated that there is no issue. (It has gotten much worse this winter.) It doesn't have this problem in the summer time .. just when its cold out. Since I already made the dealer aware of the problem last year, and they negeleted to fix anything, does anybody think I'd get anywhere when I demand a new engine to be installed??? Looking into the future, What will happen 70,000 miles down the road when the engine blows up, because it was due to a lack of OIL PSI in the early years of engine, and my warrenty has expired...

You comments would be appricated.

Thanks,

Dan

One thing I learned quickly about the 4.7 eng. is it needs a windage tray badly. A few hours after I got my used 2001 Quad Cab I floored it to see what it had and just let it shift thru the gears to about 70 mph...this was on the highway and when I stopped after taking a turn off from the highway the oil press went to ZERO and stayed there! I pulled over and began to investigate but nothing was wrong and oil level was ok. But upon start up I had a funny noise coming from the bottom end and just a little pressure. This has happened several times now if the engine is wound up. The noise is the crank hitting the foamed-up oil! The oil at full level must sit real close to the crankshaft which when wound up generates enough velocity to foam the oil so badly the pressure goes away. My oil pressure in the morning always comes up slowly. Needle moves alot when warmed up. But stays in operating range. I run oil level about a half qt. low to keep chance of foaming to a minimum. Also don't floor it anymore!

NEVER had this windage problem happen on LA, B/RB or Chevy engines. Surely someone else has noticed this?

If this was a common event 4.7`s would be dropping like flies. I don`t think so. Are you trolling or something?

My 2000 V8 is just starting to develop the high pressure reading, especially as RPM increases. At idle, the guage drops off a bit but stays above 12 o'clock. Oil level is fine and the engine runs great at 62K miles. Has anyone tried replacing the oil pressure sending unit to solve the problem? Thanks for the help! Bob

My '01 QC with 4.7L does the same thing. Shoots up a little at cold start up, then slowly climbs up to about the middle of the oil pressure gauge. Done it since I bought it new and it has 79K on it now. Also noticed that it drops a little when warmed up at idle (like sitting at a red light), but climbs back up once you give it some throttle.

what wieght oil are you using? I know when I used 5w30 and start up the pressure would jump to the half way mark. but when I started to use 0w-30. my oil pressure does the same as yours. goes to the 1st mark then slowly moves to the middle. I wouldnt worry about it.

It does get worse over time, mine used to climb to the upper tick, and stay there for a while, now as soon as the engine is warm it falls to the lower tick, and stays there until i get moving. Even at 1500 RPM's the pressure doesnt reach the upper tick.
Perhaps a windage tray would have helped out, as well as baffling in the oil pan.
For now i think i'll have to rebuild the botom end of the motor.

Jennifer - oil pressure can be dependent on rpm, but is not generally dependent on speed. Info on motor, tranny, and whatever else may be going on when this happens could be helpful.

R/Tbill - My 4.7 has never done that, and it gets floored regularly. This isn't a trait you should attribute to the 4.7.

I have a 2001 Dakota CC 4.7 with 214K miles. When I had only 80K miles my pressure started to drop a little bit above the half way mark. I started using lucus oil stabilizer and the pressure went back up to 3/4 line. I have used lucus ever since. Now the needle is between 1/2 and 3/4 line. I start with Lucus with 4qts oil 2qts Lucus. Now I may go to 3 qts old and 3 qts of lucus. Which is whay Lucus recommends for the milage on my motor. I know it is time for an engine rebuild because the bottom end of the engine was only designed for 140K miles, but until I do the pressure needs to be high. I know this doesn't adress the issue but I thought I would pass on my experince of oil pressure.
