Just out of curiosity, what would it take to swap out the auto transmission in my 1999 SLT 4X4 Dak with a 5.2L V8 for an NV3500 5 speed? Is it even worth considering, or, on the flip side, a total bolt on job? I'm not interested in performance upgrades, and would want to maintain the stock look if possible. Any thoughts?? Thanks!!

If you gotta ask basic q's cause you don't know, it's best not to even consider it. this is not something for a shadetree guy to try as metal forming, cutting and welding skills are needed, and, because of the stress the fabricated parts will undergo, that part of the job needs to be done by a pro, not by someone just out of a trade school.

what is wrong with you. what do you think these forums are for?...They are for ASKING QUESTIONS and GETTING ANSWERS. I'm not sure about the tranny swap, I personally don't think it would be worth the money.

In my limited research on the subject of doing this conversion, I learned that Dakotas with automatic transmissions may have different crankshafts than those with manuals...one that is not machined to take a pilot bearing, and it is entirely possible that the trucks came ready for auto or manual, and switching between the two is simply a matter of parts. For all you know I could be a professional mechanic with little experience in Dodge Dakotas...think before you judge.

WardenJ I don't know about doing it in a 4x4 but I did it in a 98 5.2CC 2 wheel drive and yes it was a bolt in with the exception of cutting the hole in the floor. I to was concerned about the pilot bearing but all I had to do was install one the crank was machined. I don't know about the transfer case, I believe the 4x4 use a NV4500? I posted more info you should be able to find it.
