Message: Hi y'all....
I have owned my 92 Dakota V8 4x4 shortbed (Bonzai blue) since mid 93, when I bought it with 10k-20k on the ticker....
I have had my share pf problems with it, but I love this truck!
...well, problem again....
Whiles crusing along at 50-60 mph (about 1800 rpm) at a steady clip, and USUALLY on an up-grade, the engine will start to cut out.....tach drops and sputters, engine cuts in an out and finally dies...
Usually will restart after pulling over and then die again.....Acts A LOT like no fuel.
Well, a while back I had a SIMILAR problem and replaced the fuel pump unit.....seemd ok, but as I really pretty much put less than 5k miles a year on her now, not sure if that cured it or not...
Yesterday it did the same thing and I thought I was stranded......it restarted and got me 1/4 mile down the road and quit again.....
Eventually, it started again just like nothing happened and I drove another 30 miles, trying to make it do it again, but no "luck"....
This intermittant stuff kills me...anyone have a similar experience??
Like I said, I LOVE THIS TRUCK and want to keep her for my son (who is 3) but I am getting spooked driving it....and taking it to a dealer will net nothing --- intermittant stuff and all.
ANyone?
Thanks in advance!

Message: It may be the pickup in the distributor, just under the rotor. Have you checked for codes?

Message: Checked for codes, and nothing....
If it were the distributor pickup or the shaft bushing, wouldnt it be a problem all the time??? This is VERY intermittant...cant seem to "make" it do it, but I can almost feel it coming on when it does.....

Message: dave, try putting pressure on the power wire clip that attaches to the underside of the coil while the engine is running and take note if the engine sputters and dies, or, if you are driving and have the same problem, wiggle this same connection and see if that makes a difference...I went through about $600 at the dealer with the same type of problem that you described, they never found the problem. I discovered by accident that the coil power connection had some intermittent contact problems. I replaced the coil with an auto parts store coil 3X and the problem persisted, I went to the dealer and bought the clip and wires, the problem still persisted, replaced the coil one more time with a factory mopar coil and have never seen the problem again.

Message: Will try this for sure.....SO was it the wire or the coil in the end??
By the way, mine is a magnum engine, if that matters....I know they made an ignition change from 91-92 when they intro'd the magnum....
I hope it IS something as simple as a loose connectioN!

Message: dave, i think it was probably the cheaper auto parts store coil connections since even after that $61 connector was replaced, I still had the problem...I imagine that they probably just clean up the old connections, whereas the new mopar coil should have all new parts....funny how the connector was $20 more than the coil. I have a 92 magnum 318 4x4, good luck, dan.

Message: Dave you might have a connection problem with the fuel pump. You could remove the back bed and check the connector. There are only about 8 bolts that hold it to the frame.

Message: only two bolts hold on the fuel tank. when empty it is easier to remove then a empty bed.
Is there any fuel filter on it, maybe an aftermarket ad on or something, might be plugged, got a mini van that has this very problem every 10,000 or so, change the filter and it goes away for a while.

Message: Does it happen more in different situations(wet or warmer weather, when accelerating)? I had a problem like that when I bought mine and found out it was the crank senor's wire.
Other problems I have heard of that does that is:
1) Water running down the wires through the firewall to the fuse box, causing them to shortout and finally brake.
2)Rough idle, low speed stalling, roughness when accelerating can be traced back to a bad Idle air control motor.(worse in warmer weather)
Good luck
