Message: Bad news Metalgreendak. It is a 318 size block. The 273 was a smaller displacement LA block Mopar. It won't exactly fit in a '87 but I think Dodge did make a Shelby Dakota with a 360 in it so it must be possible in a Gen 1 Dak. If youtry it let us know how it turns out.

Message: Actually, the Shelby Dakota had a 318 in it. Go look on the V8 forums for Dakota340, he's got a Gen I with a Big-Block 340 in it. It'll fit, you'll just need new motor mounts. As for the engine, I haven't a clue about it! For $50 I sure hope you intend to tear it down and rebuild... Sounds like a heck of a deal.

Message: hey guys-
im currently finishing up my 318 swap for the ex- 4 banger in my 88 dak. it ended up working out quite well and was very easy to do after i did my homework.
mine was orig a 4cyl/5sp. i wanted the 318 (i got mine for $100) that got a minor freshening, bigger bumb stick, edelbrock intake (used and cheap), and some ported heads (about 40 hours at home). all said less than $400 in the new driveline. i say drive line b/c im reusing the 5sp (using a 3.9 bell housing, clutch, flywheel, starter) and the dinky rear w/ 3.55's for now.
there will be little to no room for a fan, so some e-fans are required infront of the radiator as pushers. i got 10inch under the water pump pulley on back (dont know if it will stay there...) and a 16 inch on front. also runa 1969 318 water pump, they are shorter so u dont have to relocate the radiator. fuel lines, heater hoses, bla bla bla, will all have to either cut, or relocated or modified. its not hard just double check u hooked it all up right.
if your 87 already has a 3.9 in it u can use your existing tranny and brackets/pulleys/belts. call up schmauker and visit their website @
www.engine-swaps.com very nice and makes the swap 'a bolt on' with their motor mounts. :)
