Subject: What will my tranny hold?

Hey guys, Ive taken a long break from here and its nice to see the same ol guys talking.....I am finally in a position where I can start to make big mods to my truck...I will be graduating college and am going to buy a new 4X4 (superduty diesel) cough cough but will keep my Dakota. It currently has the 318 with the basic bolt on mods, but I want to get wild....use the super duty to tow it to the track which is an hour away. I know my options are limitless.....stroke a 318/360 to a 390/408......and so on, but my I dont want to replace the tranny. I just paid 2200 bucks to have mine overhauled with a trans go shift kit. All misc. pieces aside, will the 44RE handle the power of a 408 or will it tear it up....I am basically asking how wild can I go without killing this thing.....I know for a fact that the tranny has heavy duty clutches and Kevlar bands.....ANY help or push in the right direction will be appreciated......I also understand that running a 360 block will require minor mods to the tranny, but a Viper converter will probably be installed anyway with the necessary flex plate stuff.

when i had the trans-go installed and the trans t-teched, the guy at mr transmission said "not much" to my question of 'how much more power can the trans take.'...disheartening, yes, but true??? no, not to my knowledge...go to dragtruk.com and take a look at how many daks are pushing 400+rwhp...just about all use a transgo, but most havent had a tranny problem..i think as long as youre not attempting 9's, you just might be ok.. if it has kevlar bands and whathaveyou, it should be fine. good luck, keep it shiny side up!!
