Subject: Steering on a 97 dakota!
IP: Logged

Message:
i just recently bought a 97 Dodge Dakota 5.2 club cab, the guy had 32" tires on it,

my question is the steering seems really really stiff, i test drove another 97 dakota before buying this one, and the steering seemed stiff on that one too, (it also had 32's).

Is this because of the bigger tires? should i get a high performance power steering pump to make it easier to turn?

I think all of the 97's are like that. mine is kinda stiff too. I don't think that the 97's have rack and pinion steering, just regular power steering. My bro-in-laws 2000 is a helleva lot easier than mine

I'm assuming it's a 4x4. The wheel offset can affect steering effort. The farther the wheel/tire sit from the steering axis, the harder it will be to turn. Do the wheels/tires stick out quite a bit from vehicle. I'm assuming ps fluid is topped off, belt isn't slipping on pulley, etc.

Changed from 31" - 10.50's to 32"-11.50's ...

I changed the tires on my 97 Dak CC with 4wd went from the stockers to Mickey Thompson MTX radials 32-11.50. There was virtually no change in the steering feel for me. I used the original rims.
