Subject: Ordered a new 4.7 CC, what to mod? IP: Logged
Message: Hey all,
Just ordered a 2003 club cab with the following specs:
4.7 V8
"5-speed" auto tranny.
3.92 rear w/anti-spin
Heavy Duty Service Group
P255/65R16 tires
I've been reading up on the forum, and it looks like the first things I'll do will be a new PCM, an HO cam set and a HO intake. Does that sound right?
My goals aren't to take it to the drag strip (yet). I just want it to eventually feel like I have a Hemi under the hood, since Dodge doesn't have the cajones to offer it from the factory. And yes, I understand that this may involve forced induction at some point. I don't want to sacrifice any MPG, though :)
Thanks,
Josh

Message: Same thing I just picked up... except mine is 4x4 SLT+ with towing package. I love the 4.7 with 3.92 LSD.
I have similar questions and will leach info off this post ;)
Hope you enjoy the ride! I don't think you'll be disappointed.

That '5 speed auto, sure it has five gear ratios, 4 of them from 0mph to top end. And there's one that is used when you dowmshift to a 2nd prime gear. So it's got 5 speeds, 4 on them in sequence from a start to top end!
Why not the real 5-spd? (manual)

for the 01's and up other than the kenne bell
optimizer.
try this setup
HO cams
HO manifold
72mm billet TB
180 stat
ported HO heads ($1600)
paxton NOVI 1000 ($3500-$4000)
set of slicks
then hold on to your seat!
if your not going to supercharge it, then run the
same setup with a 4" z-tube setup with a 50
shot nitrous ($499)
supercharging it will not sacrifice any MPG as
long as you dont drive it too hard, in most
cases the MPG's go up. if you want it to feel
like you have a hemi under the hood, the
above setup with the supercharger should
bring you to about 345+ horses for about
$6500. good luck

Message: D mentioned some good mods. You may want to open up the exhaust as well. You'll get great gains but your gas mileage will go down. If you start pumping more air into the engine you HAVE to add fuel as well. You can drive around with a light foot, but then, what's the point?

Message: Flame Alert:
AUTO, I love your opinion on autos. I wouldn't have it any other way. My 1966 Fairlane has a TCI built C4 auto with a full manual valve body. I shift that bad boy into 2nd with a solenoid, but grab a B&M pro-ratchet for the 3rd gear shift. Best time as an auto: 12.109@115.18mph. Best time when it was a stick: 13.884@119.68mph (traction sucked, but it picked up hella speed at the big end). Anyways, I just wanted to get your opinion on what an "older, better hotrod" is.
Heres my list of older hotrods:
1. Fairlane
2. GTO
3. Any Ford or Chevy '29-32, '39-41
Now, heres my list of Better hotrods:
1. Hate to say it (here comes flames), any turbocharged vehicle made after 1993.
2. Any 4 cylinder import.
3. Any "Brand X Racer" ie. Mustang, Camaro, Firebird.
Now before I get flamed worse than a San Fransisco nightclub, let me explain MY definition of a hotrod.
FastRT6Dakota's Dictionary defines the term "Hotrod" as:
Noun: Any vehicle, car or truck, which can be easily and inexpensivly modified to make it perform better than a stock vehicle.
Now the reason I say easily, have you ever tried to find a vacuum leak on a '93 Mazda RX7? Good luck, call me next millenium.
Reason I say inexpensivly, have you ever seen a Ford Probe run 7 second 1/4 miles? I have. But it also took a 428CJ on a Pinto Chassis with a Probe body glued on to do it. Total cost of that abortion? $58,143.13 (thanks to Stu Evans Motorsports, Holbrook Racing, and Livernois Motorsport engineering) The point of this rant (I bet you thought you'd never hear one), while it is one thing to be proud, and another to have your opinions, remember opinions are like a*sholes: everyone has one, but usually no one else cares what comes out of it. Be kind, please rewind.

I'll start out with the HO intake and cam, and leave it at that for a while. Any recommended companies to order them from? Part numbers? Price? Cost to install (I'm not touching my new truck's engine)?
Thanks,
Josh

Message: Well fastrt6dakota,first of all AUTO is nun other than me midnightdak...lol...i guess i didn't put my name cause i tought if people knew what my opinion was on the auto tranny, they would run me off this website...so i put in a different name,But my older hotrods are a 67 chevelle ss 396 and a 67 chevy p/k with a 468 bbc and blower no nitrious cause i'm already pushing 750 hp and it being in a truck scares the sh!t out of me.If i was being a dickhead on the post above it was because when i read on of the posts above it was like the guy was telling josh to get a manual, and i was just saying my opinion on the auto being better, everyone that i have raced with my auto, when they had a manual,i have won every time, cause it took them time to shift though all the gears. You know, there's dakotas that are street trucks and there's old trucks and cars that are just badass hotrods,my dakota is my daily driver to work and back and my old car and truck are my hotrods,so if my dakota can't take all the stangs and trans-ams or ALL the newer model cars and trucks i get my old car or truck and tear that a
44 up...lol.

Message: The two trucks compared stock for stock, one auto'd and one with a 5-spd.Assuming good drivers in both. The manual will win.Less drivetrain loss.
When the mods start going on and the auto tranny is beefed up, then the playing field is leveled. There are many Pro-Modded cars out there running Liberty 5-spd's, and other similar makes.
On the same note many top dogs run the auto's for consistency, and reliability. They also seem to hold up to the abuse a little better.
It's a touchy situation, it simply comes down to preference when chosing your vehicle.
Whether you chose to row your own boat or tag along for the ride, both get the job done.

Message: see midnight, now you had to go and be the wolf in sheeps clothing. But as a teacher once told me, "Whether it comes from a genius or an idiot, a good point is a good point." At first, I thought that the AUTO person was a closed minded fool, now I learn that it was just you! I'm kidding. So, when you wanna meet and run your truck vs. my Fairlane? Sounds like I'd have competition. Around here, all of the worthy adversaries are track only cars. BTW, I almost agree with you about daily drivers. My opinion is, I love to pull up to a light with my normal looking daily driver Dak next to a Mustang with the factory installed (inside joke) Flowmasters. Usually I leave the light harder than usual to see if the Stang bites, if so, I love to hang with them. If they get cocky, I tell them to meet me later that night when I have my other car. Then I annihilate them!
Josh: Best mods (hp/$ IMO), true cold air intake, free flowing exhaust, HO intake and cams, replacing clutch fan with a dual electric, 180 t-stat, autolite 3923 plugs, and then if you have the cash, a turbo or supercharger system. Don't worry about headers, DCX did a decent job on our factory castings. Oh yeah, you may want to find yourself a dealer tech who can reflash your PCM to 49 state (non-CARB), if yours is a 50 state and you don't care about emissions. Good luck.
