Message: I use Mobile 1 filters and Mobile 1 10-30 oil in my '01 4.7L Quad Cab.For the Mobile 1 oil,Walmart has 5 quart bulk containers of Mobile 1 for $17.88 each. They go fast at that price as that figures out to be $3.58 per quart. Not bad compared to the usual single quart price you find at various places.

Refer to the oilfilter study on allpar.com, you have to dig for it but its well worth the read.
Think abou this: If its sold at Waldo mart for less than 3 bucks, just how good a product can it be?

Message: here's a quote on oil filters.
Everyone has an opinion on who makes the best , but the real-world evidence of the potential danger to your engine from using Fram (and, to a lesser extent, AC) filters is sufficient that you won't find such a filter within 10 feet of any of my cars.
After reading Matt Joseph's excellent article "Inside Oil Filters" in Skinned Knuckles magazine some years back, I bought and cut open several oil filters. Both he and I found some pretty nasty stuff inside Frams. He found twist-ties around the filter element (which under the pulsating pressure and heat, would almost certainly saw through the element in short order). He and I both found flaky rust inside the unplated filter "can". I found a cigarette butt in a place where it was evident it had gotten in there during filter manufacture! He and I both found sloppy glue jobs between the filter and its end caps, with gaps in the glue that would clearly allow unfiltered oil to bypass the filter....[more problems listed but cut]

Message: If you use a Fram filter you might as well save yourself the money and just stop changing your oil at all. They are the worst filters to use. If you care for your car don't buy your filters at WalMart, Target, Samsclub ect. Stick to the O.E. brands or the trusted auto parts stores like Napa, autovalue, carquest. Try to avoid the stores that attempt to be reputable by catering to the fart canned, "I live my life a 1/4 mile at a time", erector set winged, 18 second import crowd. Sorry Jesse James but you really sold out this time. They sell crap parts to those who don't know any better and are making huge $$ because of it.

To answer flash,
STP filters are made by Champion (read my comments at the page bottom)
Oil Filter Manufacturers
From what I can gather, here is what is out there:
Honeywell - makes Fram (In Canada the Quaker State filters are Fram filters / In the USA, QS is Purolator), Pennzoil, Quaker State
Arvin Meritor - makes Purolator Premium Plus, PureONE, Ford OEM, V-1 & SureFlow (Superflow?)
Dana - makes Wix and Napa Gold/Silver, AC Delco DuraGuards for Canada
Baldwin (Parent of Hastings) - Baldwin, Hastings, Amsoil, Casite, maybe others
Champion Labs - Mobil 1, K&N, Supertech, AC Delco DuraGuards (two different types) for USA, Bosch Premium, STP, Ultraguard Gold, Deutch & Luberfiner
Cummins Engine - owns Fleetguard
Mann - a top quality German filter maker (for our many German Friends on this site).

My comments regarding STP (and Champion). In a "cost cutting" action, Champion replaced their spot welded, plunger valve with coil spring ADBV (anti drain back valve) with a new "clicker by-pass" made from a less expensive stamped sheet metal spring. It may work well or it may not work well, but I'm not particularly impressed by it.

Message: If your going to use synthetic oil for superior protection then use a sythetic fiber element oil filter also. It doesn't make much sense to get the added protection of the oil with the sacrifice of a low cost paper element oil filter. "ALL" manufacturers of oil filters have thier draw backs in design. Although I also agree Fram is the absolute worst of them all, synthetic fiber element is far better protection.
