You sound like you're trying to convince yourself...pretty simple, you don't like em,don't buy one.I personally think it's a pretty cool truck, considering you can get a loaded CC for under $24,000.

Message: This is a retarded discussion. The R/T is good at what it's meant to do, and the 4.7 is good at what it's intention is. Myself, I live up in the north where I wanted four wheel drive and a quad cab, so my obvious choice was a 4.7. The R/T is a nice street capable truck.
My one question is, since the 5.9 comes in an automatic, and 4.7's can come in a manual, like my truck, that's 5% less loss in the drivetrain for the manual. So that amounts to about 11 HP gain at the wheels, which is close to the difference in initial HP between the two.
So theoretically a RC 4.7 manual should go about neck and neck with an R/T, right? Just making sure my thoughts are in the correct order.

Message: Will one of you guys get mad and throw your V8 out on the curb? I don't care which one...4.7 or 5.9...I'm just suffering from V8-is envy. I want a V8 to replace my V6. When I was shopping for a truck, I found exactly the truck that I wanted, except that it had a 3.9 rather than a 4.7 in it. I wasn't real keen on ponying up the extra $$ for the V8, anyway, and I'd had an Intrepid with the 3.3L V6 that ran like a scalded dog, so I figured the 3.9 would be similar. Then, when I put the Magnaflow on...YUK-O-RAMA!...I really wanted a V8 then. If only I could sneak a HEMI under the Xmas tree.

Message: you guys are missing the main point of the 360 VS 318. its only 20 hp, but its the 50ft lbs of torque that puts it ahead.
think about it guys, its about the same differance from going from a 318 to a 360 (42 cubes), as it is going from a 360 to a 408 (48 cubes)
i said the same thing when i ordered my truck "its only a 20hp diff, im going with the 318" im not kicking myself too hard, because i love the 5speed.
oh, the 318's have a 9 1/4" rearend too. (at least mine does)

also, for about $1500 you can have martain saine rebuild it, and put a new valve body in. works VERRY WELL.

| RE: Whats an RT IP: Logged
Message: You are right that most if not all 5.2 do get the same axle and tranny. The motor also use the same intake, heads, throttle body, exhaust manifold, etc. This is to the benifit of the 318 and its the downfall for the 360. To save costs mopar uses all the same parts on both motors. If they used any bigger valved heads, bigger can, and a bigger throttle body and freeer flowing exhaust on the 5.2 it's "truck" ability would start to suffer, it would lose too much torque and driveability. The 360 really bottled up using the 318 parts (which was converted to 'Magnum' status first.) The 360 really should be running all different parts as mentioned and it still would provide even more torque in a smooth daily driving motor. I think another 50-75 HP would be easy, but Dodge is just trying to simplify things and keep them inexpensive. Like I said it's great for the 318, but not so good for the 360. This is the biggest reason when you start talking mods the 360 is the way to go, there is just so much untapped potential bottled up in the 360. Basically dodge just took the new for 92 magnum 318 and bored and stroked it. That would be like just taking a stock 360 and dropping the stroker crank in it and making a 402. You will see some increase but nothing like what you see if you also add a bigger TB, headers, cam and intake, matched for the extra cubes.
Also have you ever driven an R/T compared to a stock Sport? The handling is night and day. That rear bar may be small but it's correctly balanced for the truck, and great 17" tires (betterthen the stock Goodyears) can be bought for under $100 each. The R/T also gets listed in the Nada, Bluebook, etc resale guides separately. Sooner or later a 318 trucks stops getting credit for any options it has, and basically just becomes another manual (or automatic), 2wd pickup. even a v-6 would have basically the same value (maybe an extra $500 tops for the v-8). The R/T will continue to bring a premimum although never will regain all of it's $3500 additional cost. I'm sure people back in 68 used to question why would anybody buy a roadrunner or a GTX, you could get a good bigblock and 4 speed in a Satellite, same goes with a Charger and the Charger R/T, or the Barracuda and the 'Cuda.

Message: Yeah that 46RE is the biggest thing that keeps the R/T's from having some real performance. The gear ratios's from first to second are so widely spaced, it's rediculous. Thats why you get that waaa then blaaaaa sound. I've been wanting to swap in a 6 speed into it since I bought it. Maybe a gear vendors overdrive would help some and at about $2500, cheaper than the standard coversion. Other than that it does have potential. I've done all the basics to it so far gave it a true 3" exhaust and headers , flowmaster, K&N filter , air raide throttle body spacer. With all this I'm now getting a whole 211H.P. to the ground at the rear wheels. No Lightning. But I did'nt pay 35g's for my R/T either! Don't forget that 46RE up front there is probably sucking up quite a bit of H.P. and torque! So all in all the R/T is not the race truck that it's good looks would lead many Honda Civic race car owners to believe. But it has the basic building blocks to become a good all around performance vehicle. If you have the patience and the finances to give it that boost. It needs. If Dodge would offer that new 345H.P. little Hemi in a Dakota or , a plain rapper 1500 what a street machine that would make. Dream ON!
