Subject: Rear Diff prob cont. IP: Logged
Message: So, I was experiencing right rear "wheel hop" only on sharp right hand turns. Especially from a dead stop turning right. I just had the the fluid changed out in the rear diff and the problem is WAY less, but still there to a much smaller degree. This does not happen at all on left turns and never has.
I will assume that this is more than a fluid change will fix over the long haul, so my question is this:
How expensive would it be to have an independent shop check out what kind of damage is possibly being done in the rear end? My truck is still under warranty, but I don't particularly trust the dealers around here (from experience with my tranny work). And I'd have to rent a car anyway, while my truck is in the shop.
Any thoughts on my best course of action at this point? Thanks all.

Message: Well, I'm having my rear end looked at next week by a Drive Train shop and it's $60 bucks per hour plus another $20 for fluid. He quoted be about $140 just to take it apart and put it back together.

Message: When I do take the Dak to the shop, what kind of things should I expect them to find or talk about?
Regarding the rear diff.
Things I should listen to or things they might try to BS me about?
Thanks.

Message: Our rear diffs(lmited slip) use clutch packs to apply power to each wheel. Also they have some spifder gears and thrust washers to help mesh evrything together. Sounds like maybe one of your clutch discs on one side might be bad. If they take the clutch packs apart to inspect them, expect the price to go up because they will probably want to replace while they have it apart. Will probably sya it's worn or something.

Message: Did you clean your rear out with carb cleaner before you put the new fluid in? Should have if not, but you may be able to just go to the dealer and buy a bottle of hypoid additive and add it and try it out. It is only a few ounces so you can add it easily. I would definetly try the additive before paying someone IF the only problem is turning.
