Subject: 4.7 No muffler? IP: Logged
Message: I Just bought a 2002 4.7/5sp/3.55 4X4. I traded in a 99 318 ram which was straight piped after the cat I like the very loud and deep rumble that truck had. I purchased a flowmaster 40 series but I have a feeling it will not be as loud as I'd like it to be, My question is as anyone tried a 4.7 with no muffler? If so how was the sound? also would this reduce back pressure on a 4.7? Thanks for any input.

(soon to be on Ebay) and switched to the
Dynomax Ultra flow race muffler, its a straight

sounds killer! I switched the pipe to 3"
catback and added a Megs 4" cone shaped tip
to the end...It sounds beasty, and if I get rolled
by the Police, I'll pass visual, at least. No
muffler is ticket time, I dont care what you

Message: I got full 3" single in dual out exhaust that starts at the y -pipe and goes to a flowmaster 40 series muffler which is then a dual 3" out to the sideswept 3" chrome tips. Let me tell ya, it sounds mean and loud. Taking the 3rd cat out makes all the difference in the world. It pulls harder at launches and it pulls harder at higher speed than it did before. I dont think i would like the sound of a non-mufflered exhaust.

Message: single in/out only, I heard the single in/dual out
makes you lose power...not sure though. I
think only true dual exhaust adds more power
I guess true dual is with an H-pipe and dual
exhuast back. That would be a dope setup,
headers, h-pipe, two utlra flow race mufflers,
and 3" pipe all the way through. I guess If I
lived outside of California, It would be
possible, damn those emissions!

the dynomax race welded muffler, 6" round at
$59.99....well worth the money, and the guys
at my muffler shop said that they sell them for
$120.00 !!!!!! good luck!

Message: RS, how would cutting the 3rd cat burn up the two precats? I imagine the only effect to the precats would be increased exhaust flow through them.
conig, you just have to know the right people or shop that can hook you up. In my case i just got lucky with knowing a guy that knew the owner of a shop that would do it.

Message: Kicker1
I had a 99 ram with a 318 that I ran straight piped after the cat, 3 months after doing this my cat pretty much melted. I was told that when I chopped of the muffler it displaced the back pressure directly on the whole cat. The cat's are designed to be the hottest as the enterance where exhaust gas come's in it is then cleaned and cooled as it get's to the back of the cat. Hopefully the cat's are better than they were on the 99 ram's as they did have a recall on them anyway, but I still was told this could cause failure anyway. This was told to me by a Chrysler engineer. I don't know how it would apply to a 3 cat system . If what I was told is in fact true I imagine it could happen in this situation to.

Message: Hey Jeff, where did you get you Thrush Glass Pack? Did you have to beat the heck out of you muffler to get it off the pipe, since the clamps kind of crimped the pipe on the muffler. I am going to try that this weekend, was out looking at the truck after reading your post last night.

Message: I put the thrush glass pack on my 4.7 too. Beating on the muffler only resulted in the loss of a hammer. I ended up cutting two slits on the pipe of the muffler(with a dremmel and a cuting wheel) and peeling it back. The butt dyno tells me that i may have lost a little but the sound makes up for it.

Message: Well I just spent 5 to 6 hours putting on the glass pack that cost $19.99. It was a real pain, but my truck sounds awsome, it is loud and deep. I went to Schucks with no muffler after I got it off. No muffler after the cats is way to loud, and really does not sound good. But the money for the glass pack and the two clamps that I broke was well worth the money, so are the busted nuckles and sore hands.

Message: take off the old clamps then use an air chisel to get the muffler off. Start at the back of of the muffler so that you can remove the tail pipe, then you can remove the muffler the same way. I ground slots onto the glass pack so that it would slide into the posts on the original pipes. The only modification I had to do was to bend one of the hanger brackets ( the one near the back) so that the tail pipe wasnt so close to the body. You wont think its all that loud at first, but give it some time, the packing takes some time to burn in and the noise will gradualy get better.

Message: Duner is running the 3" exhaust for his turbo application with a single 3" high flow cat. I have those pesky precats. What I did was cut the exhaust at the Y-pipe and got ride of the third cat and put in a flowmaster cat back that I had off of my '97 dakota. Getting rid of that third cat was the best single mod so far. No torque loss and a pretty good gain at 5000+ sounds better than just the cat back alone. I am running 2 frac&12" exhaust and a 3" tail pipe because that is what the cat back came with. A very win win situation IMO.
