Subject: Check Engine light on???
IP: Logged

Message:
I was at the mall today and when I started up my truck the check engine light was on. I disconnected the battery and moved the key to the start position for a few seconds (probably not long enough) to reset the PCM and then reconnected and the light went out. The truck then ran weird and the idle was below 500 rpm..Then it went back to normal.

Upon the next start up the light came on again!!!

I checked for codes but none illumuminated..

The only things I have done to the truck lately are a 3 inch body lift and 33 inch tires, and the front end was smacked up and done in the rad and condenser etc..All been replaced since..

After the accident, the truck would not idle or start unless the gas was right to the floor but dodge dealer could not duplicate the problem and I haven't had a problem since until now.

Do you guys think this is related in any way to the accident or the lift and tires?? Has anyone done the same lift and had this light come on after??

Its just probably a new snag that has developed and I am getting it looked at asap, but I was just curious if anyone else experienced this..

Thanks ...

Recently had the check engine light on my 1999 Dakota 4x4... Higher octane fuels would clear the light and vehicle would run smoother. Turned out #7 and #8 pistons misfiring. Replaced rotor and cap... My vehicle hasn't run this well in over a year.

It turned out mine was an electrical fault that caused the light. I have been running high octane fuels since almost day one and my truck runs better also!!

Your hard start issue was due to the fact that when you removed the battery cable, the computer's memory was cleared (it forgot how to run the engine - the same as when you picked it up from body shop). The computer will relearn how to run during the first couple of warm-up periods afterward (this is why the dealer could not duplicate. As for the check engine light, there are a multitude of things that could cause it to come on - even a loose fitting fuel cap. Try to get someone with a scan tool to read the fault codes.

My engine light has come on a few times now and I have taken it into the dealer to check. Turns out it has always been a fuel leak sensor. Apparently it checks the pressure in the gas tank and comes on if it is not right. They told me it was because the gas cap wasn't on tight enough, but I'm sceptical of that.

I own a 2002 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab, with the 4.7L V8. My check engine light came on and I determined it was a faulty vaccum hose. I thought I would save me the $120.00 from paying the dealer ($3.00 for the part & $117 for labor, tax, disposal fees, etc.) to have at diagnosed and repaired. Short of having to spend $70+ just to have the dealer clear the code, how can I clear the code myself? Does disconnecting the battery do this?

either disconnect the battery for a couple minutes after the repair. or after the repair the pcm will reset the light after a few start/run/stop cycles.

Do you fill your truck at the pump with the engine on? this will cause the PCM to read a major fuel evap code. If your code turns out to be a minor evap code, it will be due to the fuel cap or fuel cap vent being bad. Replace the fuel cap, drive it for a week and see if the problem stops happening. Also. Any time you disconnect your battery it will reset the PCM. after hooking the battery back up, allow your truck to sit and idle for about 20 minutes. This gives the PCM time to relearn itself. Then drive it down the road at normal driving conditions so it will relaern it's shift points for the tranny. Good luck!!!

wylman - the minor evap code isn't always what you claim. Often it's also set by a cracked vapor line. Thought you might like to know there's something else to check.

I live on the coast of NC, we don't usually have problems with the vapor lines here.

The 2 biggest things that tend to dry dot rubber, causing it to crack - are sunlight or exhaust fumes. I'm not aware of the cracking being a regional issue; as you seem to assume. Might also be related the the quality of the original rubber. I don't believe this is a regional issue.

Kowalski-It seems like you and I have been responding to one another on these threads often!! Weather conditions going from one extreme to the other also cause dry rot, especially in extremely dry areas. We don't have many problems here with hoses because it is very humid and rarely cold. We do have alot of problems with tires though. Go figure!! By the way, I like the way your Dak looks with the plow. I was going to put one on mine when i lived in RI.

Thanks. I think you'll have some valuable contributions to make to this site, once we sort out a few misconceptions. I've never heard of heat/cold cycling causing dry rot - we get extreme temperature swings where I am in western MA; but the only dry rot I've seen in rubber is caused by sun or exhaust. My trailer tires will last much longer if I keep them out of the sun - that's what you have more of in NC. I only know of the problem in the vapor lines from 7 years on this board, never seen it locally myself either - but it's come up here on numerous ocaisions.

Appreciate it, dude. Anyway, I wasn't to keen on the idea of the changing weather conditions playing hell on unexposed rubbe rmyself. It's the "old timers" that I have grown up around who told me about it. I wonder if there have been progressions intoday's rubbers that have made that problem obselete?

Not that I've seen. UV radiation or caustic gasses will still cause dry rot in rubber.
