Subject: 5.9 R/T won't shift from 1st @ 5500 RPMs IP: Logged
Message: Whenever i floor my 5.9 R/T from a stop, it gets up to 5500 RPMs and then starts jumping and wont shift out of the gear until i let off of the pedal a little. this is causing me problems when i race. one of my friends said it was just my rev limiter and a new chip would fix it. someone else told me that they had to have there transmission replaced because theres was doing the same thing. problem is mopar doesnt make a chip for mine yet, (2001 5.9 R/T), and i cant afford to void the warranty. does anyone know if theres is something you can do to fix this or if anyone else has had similair problems and if or how they fixed it. thanks.

Message: If it dos it everytime, take it to the dealer and they should be able to diagnose and fix it for FREE. Without voiding warranty to boot. Keep driving like that and you might get left stranded sometime soon or not be able to shift out of first at all. I've heard of this problem before and I think it is usually some sensor inside the tranny that gets replaced.

Message: the TPS didnt "replace" a kickdown cable. the tps tells teh ECM how far open the butterflies are open. either the transmission is shifted by the computer or it will use a TV cable to control line pressure. (my 98 CC 4x4 has a 44re and a TV cable)

Message: I had the same exact problem in my 2001 R/T. It is a sensor in the transmission that is covered by warrenty and the dealer is very familiar with this common problem. Just bring it in and the dealer should fix it within a day or two.

What kind of sensor is this? Is this going to happened lots of times?
BTW it's a 2001 R/T with 12,500 miles.

Message: I'm not sure what's going on, but after turning off the IAT controller and doing a very minor adjustment on the kickdown cable, it now shifts correctly from first to second around 5000rpms. I tested it all day yesterday and some today. After turning the IAT adjuster back on, it shift right before it hits the rev limited. It's screaming now with no lag around 5k and once it hits second It breaks the tires loose around 40mph for a split second. Before turning on the IAT It use to hang around 5000rpms for a 1/2 second before it shifted into second, which is normal on stock R/T's. But with it on, it scream threw 4800 right into the 5250 and shifts without any delay. Now if it stays like this It could shave a good .10th from just shifting faster let alone the added power.

Message: I have a 99 5.9L R/T and I experienced the same problem with around 18000km on the trany. Full throttle acceleration from a dead stop would result in the transmission not shifting out of first. I have the Mopar PCM and the limiter would kick in around 6000 RPM. I took it to the local Dodge dealer. First they changed the speed sensor the side of the trany housing which didn't correct it. Next they changed both transmission solenoids which corrected the problem. Although I still get the shift that will occur around 5600 RPM but at least it eventually shifts.

Message: I'm having that problem again, I did adjust the kick down cable forward enough to know that's not going to solve the problem. I think my transmission solenoids are shot. Could a miss adjusted kick down cable cause excessive pressure over time thus damaging the solenoids to the point it does not want to shift at WOT when the tranny is at operating temp?

Message: My '03 R/T is at the dealer right now because when the trans shifts into third gear, the lock-up converter within two seconds decides to kick in and then I have to wait for the rpm's to climb again and then it shifts into fourth. The dealer called me tonight and said this is a problem that all the new R/T's are having and I will have to wait for Dodge to come out with a "FLASH" for the computer. Does anyone know about this problem or is the dealer pulling a fast one because they don't know how to fix it?

Message: Ok guys, who out there know exactly what causes this problem? Is there a service bulletin and what is it? I've been reading several threads here about this problem and there is not a definative answer posted. Please help.
I have a 2002 R/T that intermitently hits the rev limiter at wide open throttle in first gear and I have to back out of the throttle to shift into second. This started at about 11000 miles. I just got back from the service department, the manager said that he could adjust the TV cable but it would throw off the whole shifting pattern and that it would hunt for second gear in low speed scenarios like parking lots and eventually burn up the bands. (all his words). I don't want to install a shift kit and void my 7 year warrantee, I just want my truck to run like it should.
With all due respect, please only post a response if you know for sure how to solve this issue the correct way or can add valuable input.
Thanks so very much! This forum is a most valuable tool.

Been there done that.
It is a shame the limiter is so low though :(

Message: My '96 5.2 SLT does the same thing. Its the shift solenoids and gov pressure solenoid inside tranny, coupled with TV cable adjustment and something else, perhaps fluid quality or bands or PCM settings.
I learned to listen to the truck, and I "blip" the throttle at 5 grand and she'll shift. Kinda annoying.
