Subject: water pump went south... IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2000 4x4 Dak with 70K miles on it. The water pump just went out. Is this common? Has anyone else had their water pump go out so soon?

Message: Until 2000 when I went from a 14 year Toyota owner to a Dogde man, my 83 sr 5 toyota pick-up 4x4 truck didn't give me any problems. So I guess I'm surprised that my Dak has a bad water pump so early on.

Message: This is not uncommon. The Domestic name plates traditional aim for a life cycle of 3-5 years. They design so that 60%-70 of the vechiles wil hit 120,000-150,000 with out major power train failure. Minor componets are designed to last 36,000-80,000 miles top. So you end up with a few exceptional vechiles going 200,000-300,000 with frequent replacement of minor parts every 36,000-80,000 miles. Toyota usualy designs everything other then the Corrola with a 10 year life cycle in mind and aims for 70%-80% of the fleet to average 200,000-300,000 miles with no power train failures and most minor parts last the same amount of time. So it is a trade off pay now or pay latter. If you buy Toyota New you pay about $3000-$5000 more compared to a comparabley equiped Domestic but you get double the useful life out of before you need to start working on it. All companys have exception booth ways roses or lemons.

Message: I have a 99 5.2 V8 Dakota, the water pump was replaced at +/- 12,000 miles by the dealer under 3/36000 warranty about 2 years ago. I just started to drive the Dakota more (600 mi/wk) and I thought the belt was squeaking but it was the water pump. I replaced it for the second time two weeks ago at 32,000 miles. Does anybody know it they make a "Heavy Duty" water pump or redesigned water pump. I believe it is a chronic problem. Especially those of us that ask a lot of power from the engine at high speeds and quick accelerations!

Message: I have a 1999 dakota 318 4x4 with about 67K miles that I recently had to replace the water pump. The bearings in the pump were totally shot. The coolant was utterly worthless. It looked like it hadn't been changed in years, and I am still kicking myself for not checking sooner. Because of that, I replaced the radiator at the same time as the water pump. Maybe the poor condition of the coolant contributed to or caused the water pump failure? Who knows.
I wasn't happy about it, but then again I had to replace the water pump on my Nissan pickup when it hit 70K miles. At least there is some consistency. My only gripe is that I just bought the Dodge six months ago!
Also FYI, at first I heard a squeaky noise as well. I thought it was the drive belt, so I got a Gatorback. Still squeaked, so I was planning to put on a new belt tensioner until I saw all the coolant in a puddle in the parking lot one morning. OOPS, there's my squeak!

Message: Hi, I have a 94 Dakota with the 5.2, I'm just curious if the water pump is pretty straight foward to change. Mine has 80,000 on it and it's leaving some puddles here and there squeeking a little. I haven't actually looked at it to be honest with you, but i was checking for any weird tech tips about the replacement and you guys don't seem to have any though, any help would be great thanks.

Message: Mine was making puddles before I replaced it. Look for the little piss hole leaking into the back of the pulley.

Message: It's not a difficult repair.
It is much easier if you remove the radiator and shroud.
It also doesn't hurt to remove the AC, alternator, and associated bracketry, but it is not necessary. Scrape the gasket surface well. Prep is everything 'cause you don't want to make a habit of pulling the front apart regularly.
I believe there are a few water pump replacement tip threads around if you do a search.

Message: Yes not too difficult. I'd say the hardest part was trying to get the fan off. Start to finish it took a couple hours.

Message: The only way I've been able to get the fan off is to push a screw through one of the holes in the pulley and grip it with a pair of vice grips on the back. The mounting brackets on the pump keep the pulley from turning... you can unscrew the fan clutch.
The only other time I changed the water pump I handed the dealer the pump/fan assembally and asked them real nice to do it for me. They did.

Message: I just replaced my pump today. 99 5.2L
drain, remove 4 shroud bolts, disconnect fan, remove serpentine belt, and remove pump. Hardest part was removing the fan and reinstalling the fan. I clamped the vise grips right to the water pump pulley for removalof the fan. Had a hard time getting the threads started on installation. Mine has 58,000 miles by the way. surprise, surprise
