Message: i was given a 360 four barrel out of a '75 Newport and was wondering if it bolt up to my '96 dakota 4X4 tranny. (after a complete rebuild with high performance parts of course) and if so, would it be any more powerful than my stock 318 magnum? how much work would it take to make it work with the fuel injection and would it be wourth it?

Message: first of all, you should probably stay the heck out of the shop, you sound like an amatuer. second of all, hello, it's not a chevy!!! man, i got an '86 s-10 4X4 with a 350 stroker mated to a 4 speed auto with 3:73 gears all around. (including 44" rubber to boot) i'd like to see what your "truck" would do against that in the mud pit. you probably still got your training wheels!

Message: fdfx, if you haven't noticed from the previous two posts, junior high just got out. Now, to address your question. I am currently half way through a 1978 360 rebuild and after sizing up the measurements in my 92 dakota (3.9 v6), it wont fit. Its got the room but the mounts are completely wrong. I'm not positive about your mounts, but I'm positive the 3.9 magnum is the 318 magnum without the rear two cylinders and unless they changed the mounts between 92 and 96, I'm thinking you are out of luck. The older LA engine's mounts (1971 - godknowswhen) have two lips on the side of the block that the mount slides between and bolts through. The newer engine mounts (mine anyway) are flat pieces of metal that actually bolt to a flat part of the block using 3 bolts. Regarding the size (height and width) the engine will most certainly fit. The only problem is mounts and you can usually fabricate those fairly easily. Fortunately enough, I'v been lucky to find a nice 72 road runner that my 360 is going in. Good luck with yours.
