Subject: ASP pulleys on a 2001 R/T IP: Logged
Message: I finally received my new ASP under drive pulleys “crank and alternator” from performancecombos.com. I paid $89.00 for them, when I went to install them today I noticed they were wouldn’t work. So I called ASP performance they told me that they fit a 98 to 99 Dakota witha5.9. The correct pulley is $189.00 for just the crank pulley. My question is the performance really worth an additional $100.00?

Message: I installed one at the same time I had headers put on. So I can't say how much performance increase was due to the ASP Pulley. ASP claims about 8 hp increase. Not bad for the money.
I got mine through Truckperformance.com for $164 + $5 shipping. (Ask for Eric.)
ASP has to charge full list price if you buy direct from them.

Message: Yeah its cheaper by like ten bucks but ASP is in Stafford TX it would be alot easier just driveing there and picking it up in person. Where did you get your pulley installed and how much did it cost?

Message: The pulley is about $20 cheaper (including shipping) through TP.com as compared to ASP. Also ASP will have to charge you sales tax (another @ $15). So.. its about $35 cheaper.
I had my headers and pulley installed at the Dodge Dealer and they charged me about $300 for both (I think). I live in Katy TX and had talked to ASP about doing the install. They were going to charge me $85 for the pulley. It takes a special puller, so you really should have it done at ASP or a Dodge place. Although, I bet some shade tree mechanic could use a big ole hammer and get the job done!!!!
There are several "posters" that live in the Houston area. We are going to have a "gathering" in the Woodlands area when the weather gets warmer. Watch for the Posts.

Message: I don't see how it would be worth it to spend $400 or more for the pullies, unless you are just searching for those last ponies to squeaze out of you motor. Just use a short belt when racing and probably get twice the power the pullies give you for $10 tops and 2 minutes work. All you power is the alternator and water pump. Just turn off all accessories and your alternator wont draw much power, the water pump is pretty much a necessity! That kind of money would be better spent on the short belt, electric fan, and maybe 1.7 rockers on your setup. Instead of picking up a tenth at best, you'd be looking at a half a second in the 1/4.

Message: Pulley - $169 + Labor $85 = $254.
Cheaper than exhaust, much cheaper than headers, similar to Ignition/wires/coil....

Message: It's more cost effective to save up for something more effective in producing hp. Rather than reallocating your current hp you should buy stuff that actually increasing horse power.

Message: actually its usually a very cost effective mod, and under $300 is a good deal, your gonna pick up decent power and its accross the whole range of power.

Message: i got a set of pulleys from asp and they only cost around $90. that was for both the alternator and crank.i have a 99, but surely there isn't any difference between 99 and 00 and the pulleys.

Message: My 2000 has the two fans setup as well. The 98 and 99 pully setup would be worth it if it cost less then $100 and you did it yourself, but somebody said Dodge charged $300 for the install and that's $400 total. With the 2000 starting at almost $200 for the single pully, I bet of $300 on a two pully installation $200 is the crank and $100 the alternator. That still makes it $400. If it's more like $250 then maybe that's OK, but I still think the short belt is the poor man's way to do it just as well. It may not be the best for street racing unless you like cruising with out power steering, but for a day at the strip it's no problem.

Message: Im thinking of getting the underdrive crank pulley and when i go to race swap belts and run everythig except the ac that would be an additional 10 hp gain.

Message: Dustin thats about the price of just the crank pulley which is probably all you want. This will slow down all driven accesories by 25%. You will need a new belt at a cost of about 25$.
