Hi all i changed my oil the other day and i noticed alot of white in my oil filler neck. it wasn't antifreeze. i could see the difference and my my oil was just black. I added Rizlone into this oil change. I have been watching it every 20 miles or so and noitice the cap has moisture in it each time i check it. I have a 2000 4.7l and live in new jersey. I am wondering if it is just the cold weather doing this?? A mechanic told me to change the cap. Sees it alot. This truck has only 56k on it. This is my first winter with it. Truck runs strong and was just doing routine maintenance for the winter. Any thoughts or has anyone come into this problem ...besides a blown head.... i don't think that is the prob here...

The pcv valve should pull any moisture out of the crankcase. But if you have a small water leak, the oil will turn brown. A sluge like chocolate milk will form around the filer neck. Take it and have it check asap. If the leak breaks loose it will fill the crankcase with water. And if you are going down the road, the oil pump will pump the water to the bearings. Not good. I think there is a kit that you can add the the cooling system ( like UV ) that will show up in the oil if it's a coolant leak. Better to check than be sorry.

The problem is the plastic filler neck. It doesn't conduct the engine heat well enough and moisture builds up in the filler neck. Dodge knows about it and there is a TSB on the matter. Dodge puts in a baffle and new insulated cap. It doesn't solve the problem just hides it. From what I heard don't worry about it. I contacted dodge and told them they would be responsible for any damages associated with this problem, this was on the advice of Phil Edmonston of LEMON AID fame.

I have a 01 4.7, and it DOESN'T do it.

But there was alot of talk on the 2000's months ago.

I believe SS is right!

If it runs well, take his advice!

I bet you are not using Mobil One are you? apparently petroleum oil promotes condensation,go with a synthetic and eliminate 98% of it! Been there and wondered myself why it was chocolate shake on the filler cap but its cured for the most part!
