most of the bolton parts will mix, but the lower ends are not the same, there is different sized cranks, and the balancing is different, the top end however will work.

Keep in mind that in 93(i have one too) the intake valves are 1.97", compared to the 1.92" valve introduced late in 94, i think it was 94, don't quote me. Thats why old 5.2's are rated ten more horses than the newer ones. more air...

Another thing, if you put all the parts that make 230 hp from a 5.2, onto a 5.9, the benifit will not be that great. the 5.9 needs more air but can only get so much, If you think about it the 5.9 is very restricted, compared to the 318. What good is a 5.9 if it is only getting the air flow of a 5.2.

Basically if you plan on using 5.2 top end stick with the 5.2, if you want to spend cash on aftermarket parts, you will benifit with the 5.9, but it will be stock, so you will have to start over?!

Jim, I know the 360 is externaly balanced, I am not sure if its through through the harmonic balancer or the flywheel or both. Can someone answer this? I know all the top end is the same as the 360 ie heads intake, throttle body. the block is physicaly the same so all the trannie and excessories will bolt right up. I myself am looking at doing this along with porting the heads and carefully picking a camshaft. I'm just not sure about the balancing of the motor as I also have a five speed and the flywheel may pose the biggest problem if its part of the balancing.

360 and 318 differences:

A 360 has a different flexplate if you have an auto and a different flywheel if you have a stick. The harmonic balanced is also different.

You can run a 360 with a 318 computer but, IMHO, it's a bit of a waste. You're not going to optimize the bigger motor that you just spend a lot of time and money installing in your truck.

Back to balancing. I'm building a 408 for my '95 5-speed. Rather than getting a 360 flywheel ($400+) and a 360 balanced ($100+), I'm having the motor internally balanced i.e. zero balanced.

That way I can use my 318 flywheel which I already have. I'm going to buy a new 318 balanced, only $60. The balancing will cost me $200-$250. I'll have an internally balanced motor and it will cost me less.

I am also doing a 5.2-5.9 swap...my truck is a 97' auto CC, I was also going to change the tranny (only because I got a great deal on the whole drivetrain) what should I do about the computer?? can I just run a MP PCM for the 360? or should I send it out to someone like B&G and have them flash a custom setup on it??? the parts came out of a 98' durango, am I going to have any problems with the wireing or sensors?

I would run the MP pcm for a 360. That will support a hotter cam, heads, etc. pretty well. If you go more exotic, then look at a custom flash. I wouldn't expect any problems with wiring or sensors.

Which PCM??? We're running P5249546, 94 Ram
auto 4x4(all we had on hand). Truck starts and
RUNS, but shuts off after a minute.
94 Ram 2wd manual PCM a better choice???

Assuming you've got a 2wd truck, yeah I'd go with the '94 Ram 2wd manual PCM, P5249543. How was the swap otherwise?

any year will physically fit as yours is a premag and has the older style motor mount bosses and the newer magnums have newer style bosses and still have the older style.

the only thing that will be different is the accessory drive system.

hey
like others i am swaping my ragged out 5.2 liter for a 5.9
i have a 1995 dodge dakota 4x4 auto and obviously has the 5.2 liter engine in it
my 5.9 liter engine came out of a 1996 dodge ram 1500 yet again 4X4 auto tranny

but anyway i have reached a road block and it is in the fact of my transmission i have been told that i need a new torque converter because it is obviously balanced differently but i honestly dont know what tranny i have weather it is a A-500 A-500 seris or what has confused me the most is a 46RH tranny can anyone help me

i am a machinest and can balance my old torque converter but if anyone knows where i can git the flex plate and the torque converter for this app for cost would be really helpfull or should i just ballance mine

thanks all

ok me again sorry i dugg a little deeper through some more piles of forums
ok i would like to add that my donor motor is well a super long block it has about everything other than the alternator starter and airconditioner compressor
it even includes the (what im pretty sure is the flex plate) a big round guy on the back of the motor that spins with the crank that has 4 large spokes w/a 4 hole bolt pattern
is this the flex plate and if so i already have one from a 360 haha but any way when yall say ballance externally r we talking the torque converter or the flex plate and if so where do i add weight once on the balancer

Ive done the same swap on a chevy

your safe if the mounts line up
I'm sure different years will have different mounts
a visual check and some measurements will tell you

and yes on the TBI and pcm

and start spraying them exhaust bolts now
once a day if you can get it soaking into the rust it might save you the headaches of busted bolts an busted knuckles
