Subject: problems with gas mileage IP: Logged
Message: I have a problem with my Dodge Dakota. It is a 1998 Dakota Sport with the V8 5.9 engine and the 19 gallon tank and roughly 49,000 miles. Recently I was getting around 300 miles for a full tanl of gas. And now all of a sudden it has dropped to 200 and it seems to be getting worse. When I went to fill up the tank low and behold it only took 13 gallons to fill up. This made me think either something is wrong with my gass gauge or I might have a fuel pump going out. I have not noticed any loss in power, etc. She's running fine except for this. Any thoughts on what the problem might be?

Message: It is probably the gas gauge. My doesn't ever show anymore than 3/4 full and show empty for any amount less than an actual 3/4 tank. I think that is probably the most frequent thing to brake. I have heard of atleast 10 other people with the same problem. I don't even worry about it since I found out that the gas light come on when I have 6-7 gals. left(22 gal tank). I think the problem actually is the float is broken(slightly filled with gas). I have put on 30,000 miles without a problem without fixing it. If you want to fix it, have the filter mounted on the fuel pump replaced while you have it out.
I think you mean 5.2l v8 since the 5.9 is only in the R/T and you said you have a sport. I am not sure of your gas tank since the 97 catalog says 15 or 22 gal tanks were available and the 2002's have 15s or 20 gals tanks. Anyway that is better gas mileage than I get with my 93'/5.2/auto/longbed/2wd/3.55 gears :(

Message: Sorry, I have the RT, I just always call it the sport. When I fill it up it never takes more than 19-20 gallons to fill.
How hard is this to replace? I have an extended warranty through my dealer. Will they fix it and if not what kind of costs am I looking at here?

Message: I would have a shop do it if its not under warranty.
If you did it. You would have to run the gas level low in the tank. Let the truck sit to let the fuel pressure to bleed down in the fuel line. Unhook the battery. Than you would have to unbolt the fuel tank from the truck with a jack supporting the weight. Disconnect the fuel lines and wiring from the pump assembly. Remove the assembly and replace broken/worn out parts. Reverse sets to put back together.

Message: We have never had good gas mileage in our 1996 Dodge Dakota V-8. Most full-sized trucks get better than we do!!! We did have a fuel sensing unit go out twice within warranty, but that had to do with the gas tank guage not properly representing how much fuel we had in the tank. We noticed the problem when we drove it off (brand new) the dealership lot and they told us that they had filled the tank. Two sensing units later, they finally fixed it, but our gas mileage is VERY SAD!!! Read more about our Dodge nightmare in my message under V-8s posted on 12-18-02. Good luck getting anything done under warranty--I've heard better excuses from a 5 year old!!!

Message: I have 93 with the 5.2. I have gotten as high as 19mpg. That was under ideal conditions tho. I added fiberglass topper and that brought it down some and now with the cold it as really dropped off. Has anyone had any luck with aftermarket products? I was wondering if the Tornado or Jacobs ignition systems would be worth the $. How about a Helix power?

Message: justin, is your dealer a dodge dealer, and if so what type of service contract do you have, added care of max care? if its max care it will most likely cover it all the time but sometimes added care wont cover it. if your gauge is reading wrong the fuel level sending units calibration is off. its not hard to change.

Message: Just got rid of a 3.9L RC Dak that got 14.5mpg. I traded it in on a 4.7L RC Dak and so far I've averaged 16mpg with a best of 18.3mpg. It has been my experience that Dodges get better gas mileage after about 20,000 miles (break in). I'm hoping to hit 20mpg on the highway. The best I ever got was in a 1994 QC 5.2L Dak @ 21mpg. That happened one time on I40 headed east from New Mexico. My friend's X-cab 350ci Silverado got 23mpg on the same stretch of highway.
