It's probably the leaf springs load/unloading. That rear axle isn't immune to various forces :)

the ring and pinion on the 5 speed trucks was set to have more play. It is supposed to make the truck easier and smoother to drive. It makes a clunking noise but dont worry about it, they all do it.

Sure your not talking about the drive shaft? Sometimes that can cause a Clunk sound.

It is not abnormal to have some "drivetrain backlash". My 2000 5sp does the same thing.

You just have to use more finesse with the pedals while driving. Do not unload the drivetrain while under torque. After some practice, you too will be able to drive a truck ;-)

SURPRIZE!! The Dakota is a TRUCK.

Kelly,

My wife used to drive a garbage truck in a previous life.... She can drive a standard smoother than most folks I know.

Does your 5SP Dak tend to be "jerky" when going very slow in 1st gear? This is when I notice the drivetrain backlash the most. I guess I need more practice too. ;-)

If you wish to persue this "problem" you describe... be very careful. Having somone open up your differential just to fix some backlash MAY end up with all kinds of problems. As most folks have alluded to above, there is nothing WRONG with your truck. It will not fall apart or wear out any faster because of some backlash in the differential.

K belliman,

Are there any other synptoms? Does it vibrate at higher speeds, especially when accellerating?-U joints.

Could be simple as a worn leaf bushing, or shock mount.

What year, cab, tranny and rear end, etc?

Have you guys checked your U-joints? If they are loose (missing some pin bearings) they will make a clunking noise when first starting off or when first backing up. You can check the U-joints by getting under the truck and trying to turn the drive shaft back and forth. Check for the clunking and notice on which end of the drive shaft it is coming from.

I have a 99 5.2 4x4 auto. The first thing I noticed about my truck on the test drive was the really really klunck when I put it in reverse. I asked and of course the sales guy told my it was supposed to be like that. Well I test drove 3 other trucks and the other 4x4 with an auto did it too. I bought the truck 4 years ago and havn't regreted it sence. From what I understand there's some play in the yoke and it "just does it" good unuf for me.

The rear end noise your hearing is thr retaining ring that broke out of the slip clutch of the diff unit. It happend to me at 15,000 miles. Its not real bad but its not real good to continue driving like that. if you open up the rear cover you should be able to fish out the peices. to get the parts you need to buy a clutch pack set. DO NOT go to the dealer they will charge you for an entire rear diff unit about $680 plus install. I went and bought an Auburn diff unit it was easier i think. but you should open it up anyway and get out the broken parts.

It's hard to tell. When I take off it starts slowly and when I accelerate it gets closer(the knocking) until it either goes away or I just dont hear it over the engine.
