I have been getting an average of 12-13 mpg with my 4.7 in the city. The sticker says I should be averaging 16 mpg. Is there something that I should get checked out or is the the usual for this engine?

I'm running about 14.5 highway, so that sounds close to right. I did have a week or two of 15.5 MPG but can't figure what I did right. Probably just didn't tromp the pedal on takeoffs.

From what I've read here there are a lot of mods you can make that increase MPG including new air intake and dual exhuast. Just look around for the posts.

With my 2002 4x2 4.7 auto QC 3.55, I average around 15 mpg in the city. But, I'm pretty light on the pedal and live in a perfectly flat area of the country (Baton Rouge, LA). On the highway, I can average around 18-19 mpg at 75 mph. Heck, even on my recent vacation to Gatlinburg, TN, I averaged 15.5 for the whole trip pulling a small pop-up camper.

I wonder why I'm getting so much better mileage than either of you.

Here's what I've seen with my 02 QC 4x4, 4.7/auto/3.92. In mixed driving (50% highway/50% suburban) I'm averaging 13.7 MPG (slightly more in summer, slightly less in winter). Worst seen in mixed driving - 12.5 MPG. In straight highway driving it is between 15.6-16.0 MPG at 65-70 MPH. Best highway - 17.0 MPG at 55-60 MPH. Worst highway - 13.8 MPG at 65-70 MPH. I can't explain this last one other than it was cold and windy. This is the first vehicle I've owned that has not met or exceeded it's EPA mileage ratings in normal driving.

my 2k gets about an average of 17 mpg's mixed conditions. i live in a suburban area and most of my driving is in what i would consider "city" conditions. i would say the best mod i did for gas mileage was the addition of a tonneau cover. my best ever highway mileage was 21.8. that was last christmas driving through the hills of missouri.

I'd go crazy if I cared!

I have a problem with my Dodge Dakota. It is a 1998 Dakota Sport with the V8 5.9 engine and the 19 gallon tank and roughly 49,000 miles. Recently I was getting around 300 miles for a full tanl of gas. And now all of a sudden it has dropped to 200 and it seems to be getting worse. When I went to fill up the tank low and behold it only took 13 gallons to fill up. This made me think either something is wrong with my gass gauge or I might have a fuel pump going out. I have not noticed any loss in power, etc. She's running fine except for this. Any thoughts on what the problem might be?

I replaced the stock air filter on a 2001 Dakota with a Amsoil TS-29 dual stage foam air filter (NO DIRT FLOWING K&N FOR ME) and filled the engine, transmission and differential with Amsoil Synthetics.

0w-30 in the engine, Synthetic ATF, and 75w-90 in the rear and I had a four mile per gallon increase in fuel economy (checked it three times).

That's pretty good MPG. I guess my Dak must be a lemon because I only get about 11MPG around town and about 15 MPG on the highway. When I went across country pulling a 4500lb trailer at about 70 MPH I averaged 6 MPG. I guess its time to shoot this truck and put it out of my misery.

NOt to be elitist, but the thread IS about 4.7's!!

Turkey week, trip from Houston to Ft. Smith Arkansas and back.

Now I have a QC, Leer shell on the bed, about 80lbs of padding for my wife and son to ride in the back some, another 250lbs of luggage, cooler with homebrew beer, etc. 9" diagonal TV/DVD (for my 2yr old) You get the picture, not the best for gas mileage.

Mostly highway, running 75-85mph, with an occassional stop light in a small town,
I got 20 MPG. No computer estimator here. The QC also comes with a 24 gal. tank!

01, 4.7, 5spd, Trailer towing and HD service pack, leer camper shell, tire and handling pack, two tone paint, fender flares, SLT with Infinity system.

engine mods: 180tstat, HOmebrew air intake with K7N drop in, AIT adj.-turned off, no viscous cluthch/belt fan, self ported 68mm TB, HO cams, Mobil 1 in engine.

Really, 20mpg, heavy truck, hauling a$$!

I was very happy!

By the way, I hope your posts are not from the overhead puter's, you have to divide to get the real MPG after a fill-up!

Around town I average 14.5 to 15.0 mpg ACCORDING to the overhead computer. I have not calculated it since the frist 3 months of having it.

On a San Antonio run, Columbus run, and College Station run, I can pull about 19 mpg ACCORDING to the real time overhead reading.

My truck is a 2000 Dakota Club Cab 4.7L Auto 3.55 riding on 275/55R17 Nitto's. I also have about 43,000 miles on it.

Ian,

I didn't expect to 'feel' any gain from the TB porting. I think something this sutle would have to be proven before and after on a dyno.

I took a dremel and removed the 'hump' at the bottom of the TB, and took some off the edges also. The stock 68mm TB, if you look closely, definitely has some minor restriction going to the butterfly valve.

There have been many posts on this, and some say that without enlarging the valve it doesn't matter. I think it does, by letting more volume get to the valve. Look at your TB from the outside, you'll see what I mean.

Now I could say how 'oh, I really felt the increased power', and I probably have, but just like most of these minor mods, it didn't snap my head back. I definitely feel more low end torque from my HO cams though, added ~1yr after the TB porting.

I'd say the brush guard and full time 4WD is the main reason for your low economy. The 2WD Dak 4.7L's are supposed to be 15 MPG City/20 MPG HWY. There's no way a 4WD will get the same numbers with less aerodynamics (not that my truck has "great" aerodynamics anyway). I get 16.5-17 MPG City and 20-21 MPG HWY at high cruise speeds (80+ MPH). My mods are in my profile.

I picked up an 02 QC 4.7 4x4 in June. After 5600 miles, I average 15.3 mpg. City driving, worst has been 10.8, and best was 15.3. Average is around 12. Best highway driving was 17.5 on a road trip to Vegas.

I don't think Chrysler products in general have good EPH. We have a 99 Town & Country that has been in for checks four times because of poor fuel consumption. That van has an average of 14.4 mpg (Dakota is better!) after only 27k miles (we got it new). Our avg city driving in the van is 14. Only once did we get over 20 mpg on the highway. Sticker for the van says 27 highway and 16 city. We never come close to 16 and are lucky to get it on the highway.

I'd like to try the amsoil fluid & filter swaps. According to the other post, looks pretty good.

some of your MPG went away with that flowmaster you put on, hopoe the new sound was worth the $$!

No doubt you have an auto, and some of it goes there as well.

Get rid of your belt fan and clutch, (search the posts), and lighten up on your foot some, that should come up some, (your MPG)

Would the PCM flash level have anything to do with the wide range of gas mileage people are experiencing? My truck has what looks to be an AB at the end of the PCM barcode/sticker part number. I get 16.5 with mixed driving and some heavy throttle every now and then. I get close to 20 if I drive the whole tank on the freeway without towing or going past 80mph.

I am happy.
