Message: modain - my guess for the wide range of MPG reports is the tranny. The auto apparantly SUCKS since I struggle to get 12 city with my 02 QC 4.7 w/3.92s. I added the K&N drop in and noticed an improvement of 1.5 MPG, I can get almost 13.5 these days. BTW I had the "flash" done to fix the idle issue and the MPG did not change at all :( so much for that theroy. The dealer said it would help... but so far the only thing that helped was the K&N, I already drive like my grandma.

Message: I have been getting an average of 12-13 mpg with my 4.7 in the city. The sticker says I should be averaging 16 mpg. Is there something that I should get checked out or is the the usual for this engine?"
You should probably check the sticker again. The window sticker is not there to tell you what average mileage you specifically are 'supposed' to be getting with your truck. The sticker from my quad cab has city:14, highway:18. But then in smaller writing it says:
"Actual mileage will vary with options, driving conditions, driving habits, and vehicle condition. Results reported to the EPA indicate that the majority of these vehicles will average somewhere between 11 and 17 in the city and 15 and 21 on the highway." So according to that you're right within the acceptable range.

Message: I did a little 'redneck' experiment w/ my '02 QC AWD 4.7 Auto 3.92 recently. Drove like a grandpa for half a tank in the city and got 14.9 mpg. Drove like a complete madman (full throttle from lite to lite -- yes, I was being somewhat safe ... moreso than most do in their everyday driving) for half a tank in the city and got 14.7. Interesting. Went back to driving 'normal' (about 10% madman) this morning on my way to work (40 miles -- 10% city, 30% rural hiway, 60% freeway) and got 21.3 mpg. I'm thinking that driving habits don't really effect this truck setup too much. I guess that could be viewed as a good thing.
The things that have helped my overall mileage thus far -- hard tonneau cover (peragon), switched diffs to 75W90 Redline ... both helped about 1-1.5 mpg it seems.
Does anyone know when Hypertech or Superchips or one of those guys are gonna help us get better MPG and HP/TQ outta these things. I keep hearing "next month" ... for the last six months. UGH.

Message: I rented a 01'Dakota SLT Club cab (2x4) with a 3.55:1 rear end two years ago. I noticed that the engine would stall out every time I pull out of my drive way. Also, it seemd that the transmission would ride in second for a long time before shifting into 3rd.
Of course my Hydrolic auto in my 94' has acted in the same manner when its cold. But a container of lucus took care of that problem.
My truck has almost 200 K miles on the odometer and I recently had to replace the tie rod along with the pitman arm (a very hard job to do, just take it to your local auto repair shop because its not worth the pain) and now the gas gauge seems not to be resetting it's self after a fill up. But I can cruise 92 miles on 5.5 gallons of fuel.
When Chrysler built the 287 powertech motor, they intended it to be a great replacement for the older LA 318 engine. True, it does feel stronger but that's because its less restricted and revs a bit higher. But I'm have been seeing 18 on the HWY. with my old 4x4 B-body kota, and thats something the new truck I leased out never saw. Only 17 at best.

Message: I get about 12.7 in town and 14.5 15 on the highway. I had it to the dealer for the rough idle as well. What is this I hear about grinding out something on the throttle body to get better mileage.

Message: Hello Choochoo,
Have you checked to see if the odometer is adjusted right? With those small tires on it you may not in fact be going as far as you think.
I have 265's on mine and I only get about 15 to 16 with the rest of the setup the same as yours.
Let me know,
Craig

Message: Them SMALL tires are stock size. That's what I had. So I doubt he has a odomerter problem. I'm running 255 65 167's now, the same height just wider.
I have got 19 highway with my 2003 before. Was the one time I refrained from doing 100+ up the mountain hills and pretty much used cruise control more often.
I get about 14 city if I'm nice and about 18 hwy just as the sticker said. I think I average about 15 to 16. But I hot rod my truck a lot.

Message: Hello GraphiteDak,
I bought mine used with 70 R16 265 on it but the guy I bought it from I believe said he ordered it with those. I guess I havent checked to see what the factory puts on there. I wonder if my rpms are maybe too slow with the 265 to be very efficient on gas mileage.
Do you think smaller tires would help?
I have 25,000 miles it now and I bought it with 17,000. Maybe its not broke in yet either.
how many miles on yours?
Mine is a 2003 QC 4.7 with 3.55 gears.
Thanks,
Craig

Message: I was getting 13 city / 17 highway with my 01 Dakota 4..7 4X4 (3:23 gearing). Auto (4speed).
I put a K&N drop in filter and cat back dual with a Flowmaster and now I get 16 city and 21 highway.
I also use synthetic oil
Tires are 265/70/16 These are a factory size
I used to get 18/25 in my 72 Nova with a 350 cam header and holley 4 barrel and a 4 speed, but it weighed 2800 lbs and the Dak 4x4 is nearly twice that.
