Message: Headers will always increase the noise heard in the cab and out side the truck. Ones ability to percive it is another thing all together. I know people that can not hear the the engine sound change as the clutch begins to engauge. On the other hand my 4 year son can tell the difference between the sound of a diesel and a gasolline fueled engine by sound. Their is no free lunch. Headers will always add heat to under hood componets causeing heat saturation and they will always add Noise and Vibration to the enviroment. Most people do not reliase this but one of the things that is done in comeing up with a cam profile is valvetrain noise. By ramping the ralve open slowly and linearly you can reduce valve train noise but this hurts performance. On something like a Z06 Vette performance takes priority over valve train noise on a non Z06 the profile is different to offe less noise as the non Z06 buyer will not be a ratical performance purist and on a Cadilac performance will be sacrified for sound. The difference in formance is about 15RWHP but the reduction in noise can be major. So just about everything on your vechile will affect the noise signiture in some way. Just look at how thick and heavy a cast iron exh. manifold is compared to a thin tubular header.

Message: Made a difference on my 97 5.2 CC with DynoMax Super Turbo catback. Not a huge difference, just a little louder at the loudest point (heavy acceleration, and at that 2000-2200 rpm resonance point). No difference in sound from under the hood, only at the exhaust tip!

Message: sandman, your son has a greater dynamic range of hearing than you do too. Generally speaing, since our hearing is dying slowly from when we were born.
The 4.7 flows real well stock, but what about an old 350? I bet it would sound much different since it's difference in marginal change in flow is more than ours.
I would say it does, but I wouldn't look for any huge change on the 4.7s. instead, try cutting the cat.

Message: You are right all of his senses are better then mine. The difference is that I know how to best put mine to use and I know what I am listening too.My Dad and I would try to identify the cars in a parking lot starting just buy the sound of the starter. I was trained as a classical musician so I can disern different sounds better then most even though I have lost some hearing. Knowing what to listen for is just as important as being able to hear. It is physical impossable for it not to change the sound and frequency dynamics of the vechile. It would be similar to making a wall 1/6 as thick and out of a material less dense and saying that you could not hear your neighbors more then before. I will not put header on anything that I am not going to race. They "headers" saturate under-hood componets with alot more heat and sound pressure waves. Headers will resonate alot more at a wider freq. range then cast iron manifold. The headers will crack alot sooner unless a flexable resonator is added as a bridge between the header and the rest of the exhaust system. If you want to install a turbo most headers will not hold up to the added heat and weight of a turbo. Most headers are cheaply made and will warp much sooner then a cast iron manifold. I wish we could get MOPAR to make us castiron tubular manifold/headers. Oh I forgott to mention that few header companys do any pyrometer studies to ensure that the O2 sensor wil function exactly as it did in the OEM design. Has anyone tried porting and extrude honeing the cast OEM manifolds. I am guessing that they would flow well enough for a super charger or turbo charger and would be alot more durable then aftermarket headers.

Message: Hey sandman, friend suggested headers on my 97 dodge ram 1500 360 i love the sound of my truck was not able to get true duel exhaust like on my old chevy, because of the build but i got single to duel sounds decent but not as good as my chevy did. i want my dodge to sound a little stronger more then what exhaust cant handle but u said u wouldnt put it on any thing u wouldnt race with? i mean i race from time to time, but more or less want the power sound from it, my engines got high milage 314,00 is it a bad idea to pop some on if it will make it crack faster? (i no this is a dakota page but i googled it :P)
