just a FYI, i measured my 42re (same length as any of the other overdrive trannies in a dakota) and measured my 727TF. The TF is less than 2" shorter than the RE.... thanx to that tailshaft

From the information that I had found out, from
alot of research, is that the 518, and 727
transmissions are identical except the for the
following fact..
1.. the 727tf is 2" shorter in the tail.
2.. the 518 is the 727, but has the electric
overdrive button. Just Press the Button,
and you are running a 727 tranny..
If you have other information that says
different, I would be greatly appreciative of this
for my information and knowledge...

take em apart... you'll notice a lot more differences than those listed.
