Subject: Burned Rear Differential IP: Logged
Message: My rear differential emmitted a terrible burning. I stopped and called a wrecker but when I backed up I heard terrible clanking of metal. The dealer noted the speed sensor was broken and the fluid was burned. They recommended a complete overhaul.
My mechanic took, it apart tonight and noted burned fluid residue inside the pumpkin. The speed sensor is broken. The gears look fine but the inner clutch(es) may be shot. 1997 v-8 magnum slt - 120,000 miles
Any suggestions?

Message: If the gears are fine, then it looks likes it's time for a PowerTrax unit. Replaces the stock clutches and you won't need to do a complete overhaul.

Message: If you do not need a locking rear end I would not put one back in! The more complex anything becomes the more prone to failure it is. I am not a big fan of the of these cheap lockers that just replace the spider gears and keep the stock carrier. They are cheap but they have some serious durability issues! The best diff for street use is the Torsen and it is also the most durable. I do not think they make one yet for our 9 1/4 rear end yet. My next choice would be the traditional detroit locker. While the friction plates will not last forever they are easy to rebuild and they do not have a history of blowing apart!! You should realy consider useing a good synthetic gear lube. Redline, Amsoil, or Mobil-1. I listed my them according to my preference! If you have to replace the Ring and Pinion gears you will have to take it realy easy on the truck the first 500 mile. It takes longer for the gears to break in then it does for an engine to break in.
