Message: Go for a custom setup! I reccomend borla turbo mufflers. They have a really great tone and dont cost that much.
You can get three inch mandrel bent piping from any muffler shop.

Message: Any good muffler shop will install a 3" exhaust. As for the muffler I recommend either a Borla, being the most expensive and top notch performance, next I would recommend a Bullet, a little less expensive but still a top performer. Also a good one is Gibson. Just stay away from Flowmasters, they sound loud and do not help performance. Also, choose a cylindrical muffler as opposed to a oval one. Oval muffler compromise the sound quality for space. Our trucks have enough space for the superior cylinder-type mufflers.

Message: Let me lend you a hand on this one. I just had an exhaust put on my 99 Durango 5.9L, and went through much of what your going through now. So let me tell you what hours of research and phone calls and conversations told me.
1. Who made the best muffler?
I read a whole lot of data on this subject. Scoured through pages of archives on reviews and tests of the best muffler. For me it boiled down to cost and which muffler had the most flow for the sound I was willing to put up with. Hands down Dynomax mufflers allow the most CFM. The more Cubic Feet per Minute the more performance, obviously retaining back pressure. I know it's probably sounds cooler to say you have a Borla on your rig. But the facts are that Dynomax outperformed all the top manufacturers performance wise.
Some examples of this are the Borla 40600. The Borla produces 836 cfm, compared to that of 1000 cfm for the Dynomax Ultra-flo. Another example is the Gibson 788200 @ 311 cfm vs Dynomax Super Turbo @ 410 cfm. So go ahead and research for your self, but I went in biased because I always used Flowmaster until I read the write ups and saw the performance data. Dynomax is simply ahead of the curve.
2. Cost and Sound?
My priorities were: sound, performance, cost (in that order). Because my rig is not a truck, I did not want a lot of interior resonance. I went with the Super Turbo. I gave up on max performance to get a little less noise. I sort of wish I went with the Ultra-flo because the Super Turbo is a shade more quiet than I wanted. But it still sounds deep, toned, and mean. And I noticed an immediate difference leaving the shop.
I opted not for the cat back system from Dynomax because with my budget It was either a cat-back, or an Intake and a muffler. But the cat-back is stainless mandrel bent 3" inch, so that even more cfm's while maintaining back pressure. So I researched and came to the coclusion that Dynomax makes the best product out their. Hope that helps.
