Subject: belt tensioner IP: Logged
Message: I have a bad belt tensioner on a 91 dakota with the 5.2 engine. Unfortunately the dealer says that they don't make the part any more and so far I've had no luck finding a used one.
Are there any other dealers that make a tensioner that will work with this? Can I use one from a 92 or a newer RAM?
Thanks

Message: I actually have that same belt tensioner pulley. I tried to get one from Dodge but they wanted over 100 dollars cause they said they couldnt get just the pulley but rather the whole tensioner and the pulley. So i went to a local autoparts store and sure enough the gates is what i got. And a very quality piece at that for 1/8 the price.
125 hp Nitrous, 5.5 Inch Lift, 33x12.50's .........etc. etc. etc.

Message: I must have found 2 of the other five peoplke in the country that a '91 Dakota with a 318. My tensioner also went out about a month ago. I called every parts store in my area (NH, not really that many!), I called 18 junk yards, I called 3 large Dodge dealers across the country who did nation wide searches, I even called Chryler customer service in Canada and had them do a nation wide search. This part is not available any where!
The good news is this: Tim Austin of Austin Automotive here in Fitzwilliam went to a couple parts store and went through about 100 tensioners and came up with something that works. What he bought is Gates Tensioner, number 89217. The tensioner bolted in without modification, but the pulley had to be changed because it was an interior style, had grooves. If you do this you might need a slightly shorter belt. The travel range seems to be slightly offset from what came stock. However, it is installed on my truck and working!

Message: We just went through all the heart ache with the 91' V8 belt tensioner thinking we would have to buy a new truck because NO one makes the tensioner - you CAN get one from NAPA part #38139 it works just like Dean Skelton said we had to call Gates to try and locate the part and they told us about NAPA!! That is the only place we found that had it -Express Auto parts says they have but then they e-mail you and say they don't so go straight to NAPA for the part. I believe like Dean said they had to put on a shorter belt but it WORKS!! Good Luck!!
