Message: I have heard mixed results about the r/t cam. An aftermarket cam from www.Hughesengines.com, www.krcperformance.com(comp cams) or Crower's will be a better choice. The hard part is choicing the right one, not too big not too small. Since you have a 5spd I'd look at cams with a duration in the 208-214 @0.50 range.

Message: FYI-- I can get whatever grind you want from Crower (any grind, custom, or one of Crower's standard numbers) for $280+ shipping.
I personally run a .512/512, 208/204 --- I run RT 1.92 heads too-- in the 290 hp range at the rearwheels w/ my 5.9...
It's a mild cam, high lift... A .512/512, 210/212 would be a little better on the mid and top end than mine-- but I wanted to try to keep it well rounded.

Message: On my '92 5.2 automatic, I switched from the r/t cam to a hughes 1418 (214/218 duration, .520/.544 lift) and added the M1 2bbl at the same time. On average I picked up 3 tenths and 3+ mph in the quarter. No loss in driveability or gas mileage. Runs best when shifted at 5800-6000. Best run with this combo is 13.74 @ 99.88.

Message: rtxpres,
Do you have any problems with your emissions, if you live in the real world and have to get it inspected? How big of a cam do you think you could run and still be streetable(emissions, idle, 93 octane)? Do you have any power #s on your setup (chassis dyno#, rpms of peak hp/tq or what your redline is set at)?
I have been reseaching as much cam spec./performance # info as possible but, I am still undecided on what I want for my daily driver. I do most of my driving on none highway 2 lane roads. With my stock spec. 93' motor(long bed 2wd). I think the stock truck has no balls at all unless just of the line in first or above 3000 in 2nd gear. Because of this I do most of my driving at 90% WOT. I want around the same performance#s of your truck but with slightly less strip oreintation(4.10 instead of 4.30s, 200 lbs heavier). Since you probably have an idea of want I want, any info would be helpful.
PS: I think your truck is one of the best looking I have seen. Thanks

Message: Thanks for the compliment power hungry! We don't have emissions testing in my area :) so I can't answer that. No dyno #s either.:( This hughes cam idles almost like the r/t cam and has a broad power band, 2000-5800, so it's nice on the street, especially with the M1 2-bbl. It pulls noticeably harder than the r/t cam above 5000 and though I usually shift at 5800 I have run it over 6000 on occassion and it's still pulling. I use 92 octane fuel. I've tried 94 and it slows me down.
When you mention bigger cam I'm assuming you mean one with more duration. Just remember, the bigger you go, the more low and mid-range you lose.:(
Regarding my 4.30 gear, I use 28" dia. tires. I ran nearly the same numbers with a 3.90 gear and 26" tires but made the change to get more tire contact to the track from the bigger diameter.

Message: If my math is correct using the rt cam with 1.6RRs is equal to using the stock cam with 1.7RRs but puts less strain on the valve train.
