Message: 2001 5.9 quad 4wd
my tranny will not use the gear right above overdrive
whenever i am cruising @50 mph's and reach a hill in need of some added gas pedal.....my tranny goes down 2 gears instead of just one which seems sufficient for the need....then it seems to downshift back intoo a gear too high and sometimes right back down......all of this while still climbing the hill
it seems too be searching way too easily...for a 5.9
its got 27000 miles and i have had the dealer do one tranny service on it with +4 fluid
anyone?????help????

I hope I'm not going to insult your intelligence, but are you sure it is downshifting 2 gears? I'm asking because a shift from 4th gear (OD) with the converter locked to 3rd gear (D) with the converter unlocked can feel like a two gear drop. If you're not sure, take the truck out and get it to do the shift you describe...then immediately stand on the gas pedal. If you get another downshift, your truck has just been hunting between 3rd and 4th, locking an unlocking the converter to maximize gas mileage. Annoying, but probably normal. If it bugs you, lock out the OD until you start cruising at a higher speed. But if your truck is truly doing a 4-2 downshift at 50 under relatively light to moderate throttle, or what you describe is not how it has always shifted, your dealer needs to take a look at it.

Message: MOPARornoCAR,
The rpm's drop by about a third, 1:1 3rd gear and .69:1 for 4th. Thats about a 750rpm drop at 50 and a 875rpm drop at 60mph.

Message: I'll buy what PowerHungry said. I can't check for sure because my truck is several thousand miles away right now, and your 5.9 and 46RE setup is a little different than mine anyway. I'd be close, but not exact.

Message: Ahh yes, the trials and tribulations of the infamous automatic tranny. I know, I know, you would have gotten the manual, but they don't offer it in the 5.9. And aahhh yes, the 5.9, much larger c.i., a scant increase in HP, slightly more torque, and overall a slower truck than the 4.7 SOHC.
Ahhh yes, the trials and tribulations,
Manny, Tranny that is

Message: Ahh yes Manny, you hit the nail on the head. The 5.9 with all its aftermarket parts that are available and easier to do than the 4.7 makes it such a bad choice. The increased torque for towing is a bad thing too. And what was Dodge thinking putting a consistent auto tranny behind the 5.9?? If people would just learn how the 46RE auto works, it is a very good tranny. I never had any troubles with mine in 116K miles of driving(before I wrecked it) Of course the heads and cam that I did along with intake manifold, and PCM really pepped up my truck. What's that?? No custom cams for your 4.7?? Huh?? Only one option for heads?? I'm sorry for you. Oh and the only intake manifold option is the HO intake manifold which has yet to show any significant performance gains.
Now, back to the original topic, the RPM difference between 3-4 is 1000rpm at 60mph. Set the cruise at 60mph and with the 3.92 rear gears, the RPMs will be 2000RPM, turn the OD off and the RPMs will jump to 3000. It just sounds to me like the tranny is searching for a gear. Turn the OD off when it downshifts to keep it in 3rd and it will pull smoothly up the hill.
