Subject: any hp gain from muffler swap on 4.7? IP: Logged
Message: Is there any hp to be gained by swapping out the factory muffler on the 4.7 with a hi-flow one? Obvioulsy a hi-flow would sound better but the only way I could justify spending more money is if a got some gain, has anyone dynoed after only a muffler swap (I already know dynos on the cat backs are showing a loss in torque that's why I'm asking bout just the muffler)?

Message: I have a 02 quad cab w/ the 4.7 and i put dual exahust after the cat. I put on the flowmaster 3 chamber. I didnt notice so much change in high end, but my truck had alot more acceleration after I put the flows on. I mostly did it for the sound. But over all I did notice a gain in acceleration and there is probly a top speed gain too but those stupid governors. I need a programer to get rid of that thing. Ha Ha

Message: Put a Flowbastard on the 2000 4.7. Didn't notice anything.
Pulled 201RWHP & 273RWTQ with just that mod.
That's right on with factory at the crank with the 5-spd (235)
Sounds a heck of a lot better.

Message: You have to do the cat as well. I put on a carsound cat and will hopefully be putting on my magnaflow muffler when I have the time. It's a 2.5" in/out stainless. It's supposed to be the one of the better performers on the market. And the quieter. I'm not into loud.

Message: I put a Flowmaster 70 (the 22" long one) behind the cat, with 2 1/2" pipes and stainless slash cut tips exiting behind the rear wheels like the R/T single. No noticable floorboard noise. Sounds great and pulls strong. 4.7 5-speed 2001.

Message: I installed the Flowmaster 40 series with 2 1/4 outlets behind each wheel. It sounds great but I think I lost some low end torque which is likely because of less back pressure. My Dakota is a 2000 4.7 . How can I regain the lost torque without changing cams, etc. ? Thanks

Message: I put a Dynomax on mine, and I think I lost a little bit. But it sounds alot better though. Has less of a whooshy noise and more of a rumble. Not really loud either.

Message: If you are looking for some noise just go get a straight pipe made. I bought a lifetime Dynomax and an extention for $100. It didn't give me enough noise so I bought a $10 straight pipe, Sounds tough, I love it. Good Luck

Message: I did a Borla 2.5" in/out in a 4.7L durango with the factory pipes, to me it made a big difference in performance and sound. I have hit the 115 speed limiter a couple of times and it just wants to continue accelerating.

Message: LOL- gains from a single to dual cat back on a 4.7!-LOL
Ever notice-
The but dynomometer is directly proportional to the money you spent on a dyno proven basically worthless mod?
2-3 hundered dollar cat back, and oh yea, I really noticed a difference in accelleration, and top end!
I applaud those of you how have admitted minor losses in low end, and only gains in the tympanic membrane!(ear drum)
Get a life people!

Message: so what's the conclusion, a new muffler buys you better sound and loses low end torque? That sure sounds pretty crappy to me!

Message: Does anyone have part numbers for Flowmaster, Magnaflow, or Dynomax mufflers? My dad has a 4.7 QB and I want to get him something so his truck sounds mean. He's mentioned a couple of times that that is what he wants. I just want to get the muffler because I can't afford the catback...semi-broke college student

Message: I have a magnaflow #14256. It's a S.S. 2.5" in/out straight through design. It bolts directly in place of your stock muffler. Cost me $100 from truckperformance.com. Made a nice sound improvement. Not to loud at all except for when I get on it. It made a decent improvement in acceleration quality. By this I mean acceleration became much smoother and i'm pretty positive a little faster. Open up your intake as well otherwwise you won't feel the full benefit.
