hey jeffro, some of us have enough money to have a truck and a bad ass car. I drive a 98 Z28 on the weekend and during the week i drive an 01 F-250 with the powerstroke. I would like to see your dakota pull about 25,000 pounds of steel. Quit being a little girl in your gay little truck.

Not to mention my Z28 runs a 7.2 in the 1/8th mile. So it isn' stock.

Name another rear wheel drive Mopar you can buy today with a V8? That's right, you can only get that in a truck. So that's what I choose to turn into my hot rod.

hey...yankedls1 your missing the point jacka$$...we love our dakotas so much because they can haul stuff, go 4wheelin, do this or that and still get near sports car performance with a few mods...there are few other (or is it none)trucks smaller than full size with a V8 in them...midsize + V8 = fast, sure not as fast as a camaro, but a lot more practical and fast enough...as far as your powerstroke try using that for a daily driver...certainly not practical either...go have some fun "powerstroking" yourself and beat it chump!

Hey I love my truck I am unedr 25 and its a sports car without the insurance. You can do a little work to them and bam you can beat most sports cars. In my truck i have no respect for Mustang GT (stock)even when my truck was stock. Why spend 25k on a cow pay more insurance and still not be able to tow my boat. My truck is a Sport Truck / Show Truck it has plenty of up side that I could not get out of anything besides a truck. Check my truck out at Speedgraphics.net. It usualy rides on 20" Boyds but they were being polished.

I need a truck, simply put. I don't need a sports car.. I have had my share of sports cars (pony cars) hence the name NOTCHLX. They are good, but they won't tote the boat.

It might not be a 7sec "sports" car, but that's fine with me. It runs 14's stock.(the fastest American cars made in the late 80's ran 14's...Corvette, T/A, Camaro, Mustang, Buick GN, Daytona Turbo Z, etc...) That's pretty darn quick for a little 287. I didn't get 4X4, cause I don't need it. I have hauled the boat, 3,000lbs of concrete, any many brush trips to the dump.

The last 6 post I agree with...More practical for some to have the truck...Others just want it.

You talk a lot of crap about that Camaro Yanked. Go to LS1.com you'll blend right in.

Hey Yankedls1,

First off, two strikes against you for owning a mulletmobile (the Camaro) and a Powerjoke.

Secondly, you are comparing apples to oranges. A V8 turbo diesel vs. a small block V8 gas engine? Ok, if you wanna play that game...let's compare the Cummins 5.9L 6cylinder to your V8 Powerjoke. There is no comparison. Mod for mod, you're gonna get more power out of the Cummins than that Navistar diesel of yours. Have fun working on it too. I have never seen such a clusterfuk of hoses and sh1t all over the place than in a Powerjoke engine bay.

There are a lot of idiots but no need to bash some of the best Amnerican cars and trucks going.

Plain and simple the Dakota is the ONLY midsize truck with the V8 and still sporty. No need to rip on a Powerstroke or other American cars when it's apples to oranges. And you'd have to be in denial if you believed that the 6 shooter cummins has more power than the powerstroke. Because it doesn't and not even close. I used to drive a '95 F350 Powerstroke DAILY with 10,000 lbs of tools on it. That's the OLD powerstroke and it got 12 miles to the gallon and had lots of power. I drove my in laws 2002 Cummins and it is a RAM2500 and was no quicker unloaded than the old Ford I drove. The new powerstroke has 525 ft pounds torque and could drag most trucks upside down like a crushed bug! The Dodge diesel is cheaper. Most people I know including in laws bought the Dodge over the Ford because of price.

So be happy you're not driving a RICER and enjoy your MOPAR.

Now. That that's out of the way. Does anyone know what the charge is to upgrade the 2003 RAM1500 to a Hemi 5.7? Last time I looked on the Dodge site it didn't give that option yet. I want one :-)

paysonbadboy,

Ok, I was a bit harsh on the Powerstroke and perhaps I wasn't clear. I didn't say it was more powerful in stock form. The Powerstroke is more powerful than the Cummins stock to stock. If you plan on not doing anything to it, the Powerstroke might be a better choice for you. When you start bombing the two...that's a different story. The Cummins is by far a superior engine in simplicity and durability. When it comes to modding the two, the Cummins is a better choice IMO.

who the hell cares about the powerstroke, it cant even be put into the same class as the allmighty cummins. the cummins has 1.4 litres less displacement, 2 less cyliders and makes more torque(who cares about horsepower in a diesel) over the rev range than that v8 hose farm. what is your major malfunction comparing a dakota to your crap wagon, why not compare a dakota to one of those freakishly weak rangers.

I think the dipsh*t with the f-150 and the camaro is neglecting to mention something. He said his Camaro does 7.2 in the 1/8th mile, not the quarter. In my Book that translates down to a 15 on the quarter. Hell, when my R/T was stock it could pull mid 14s. Take that pansy ass Camaro somewhere else.

The new cummins deisel for '03 not only has more torque than the powerstoke, but is rated with more hp than the Powerstroke. making the smaller inline 6 more powerful than a larger V-8. Also, the new cummins is a lot quieter than any other domestic deisel in a truck. The land speed record for a truck is held by a Dakota powered by a cummins deisel.

If the Hemi is less than $1k to upgrade I think that will be a no brainer!

Oh yeah. I have driven both the cummins and powerstroke. And believe it or not, the V8 Powerstroke revs HIGHER than the cummins. And it makes wide power. If you think the cummins has more power and/or more pick up and go off the light then you have never driven a powerstoke.

According to a comparison I am now looking at.
Ford powerstroke makes 560 ft pounds torque with either auto ar manual tranny.

High Output cummins makes 555 ft pounds on the manual and only 460 ft pounds with an auto.

Ford powerstroke makes 325 HP.

Cummins makes 305 maual, and only 250 on the auto.

And the '03 powerstroke has a higher redline and powerband than the '03 cummins high output.

When comparing the new HEMI to the Ford 5.4 the HEMI has 345 HP compared to Ford's 260. Torque is almost the same though so who really knows how good it performs so far. I wouldn't mind the 345 HP and for the price if the upgrade is really only $795 that will make some serious truck for the money. A Lightning is too much for a 2 door truck for me. I need a 4 door truck. Ford is putting the Lightning engine into the Harly Davidson but again lotsa $$$ over the Dodge.

OK. I again went and looked online on the Dodge website.

No HEMI's on the RAM1500.
It only shows the option on the RAM2500.

That sucks.

Has anyone asked if there was any way to get a HEMI on the RAM1500?

And only if we could get it equipped in the Dakota :-)

paysonbadboy,

You are accurate with those figures, but I still stand by what I said before. If you're are keeping them stock, the PSD is just fine.

When you modify them from stock, the Cummins is the better choice. Look at the picture above, and compare the Cummins connecting rod to the PSD or the GM 6.2/6.5 rod. Way more beef in a simpler package. It's considerably more durable than a PSD. I have seen the average Powerstroke go 250K miles, whereas I have seen the average Cummins go 350-400K miles.

The power figures of the PSD are very impressive, but it's still a V8 diesel which just doesn't seem right. I mean, how many big rigs do you see running a V8 diesel? It's all about the simplicity and durability of an inline 6.

remember the hemi is just the replacementfor the 5.9L, so of course they will put it in the half ton. the new 6L powerstroke si kinda neat, but for a diesel the optimum setup is a straight six. just look at all the big rigs out there.
