Subject: K N FIPK How hard to install???? IP: Logged
Message: Unlike most people at this forum I am not very
mechanically inclined. I have a '99 4X4 with a
5.2. Is installing a GenII FIPK a pretty simple
job? Any hints or things to watch for would be
appreciated. What online source has a good
price?
Thanks

Message: No, not to bad at all. All you need is some tools and a couple hours. A normal tool kit with sockets, wrenches and screw drivers will get the job done. I think the Kit is $200 and I have had mine for 6 months now and clean the filter every 2-3 months. Go buy the the filter Cleaner and Oil Kit and service the filter regularly. I do after dusty wheeling trips. You can feel the difference in power when you put it on and when you clean it.
The only side effects that I seen on all types of cars is that over a long period of time the Throttle Body will start to get some of that oil in it. This causes the throttle to stick closed and may take more effort to open off of idel. Here at my work TheCarCareCenter.com we clean them on the Hondas and Acuras all the time. Not yet on my Dakota though. Wifes Accord V6 I have cleaned it Twice.
With the 3" body lift I had to remove my Heat Shield on the FIPK to make room for the lift. Now the filter sits on the fender. Should I get a throttle body spacer to lift the intake and body off of the fender?

You can download the instructions at K&N's web site, look for Part #57-1509 for 97-99 Dak's
They really are not that hard.

Message: Hey, I've got a '99 4x4 with 5.2 as well. truckperformance.com had best deal on FIPK when I got mine over the summer. Good install instructions w/kit. Only problem I had was mounting heat shield to fender. The bolt head that goes through fender kept turning and had to remove plastic fender liner to hold it with wrench. Of course, plastic clips that hold fender liner broke off, but my local ACE had new ones.
