Subject: Easier oil changes?
IP: Logged

Message:
I own a 02 dodge dakota SLT. Got the v8 4.7 liter motor, with all the options. With those options, I have the skid plate package. Yeah I know the plastic crap under the truck. Anyway, oil changes really suck. I mean I have to remove the skid plate everytime. And if I have a shop do it, they just drain right into the skid plate. I found a half a quart in there last month from the previous oil change done. I have seen in the past messaage boards, something you can do, something that can be put onto the existing plug hole, and extend it??? Please any information would be great. Thanks

Steve

If you switch over to AMSOIL you will eliminate
those "frequent oil changes" and "frequent skid
plate removals".

Chose from 7,500 mile six-month oil drain
intervals to 35,000 or 1-year oil drain
intervals.

Dr. D you didn't answer his question. Don't give him your opinion on what oil to use unless he's asking for that particular type of info.

Steve, there's something made by FRAM (I think) called a drain extender or something like that. I can't remember the part number or anything, but do a search here on the boards and you'll come up with something (by search, I mean go to the search feature). Also, if you spill oil all over yourself when removing the filter, then cut a two liter bottle in half and place it under the filter to catch all the oil. Either that or punch a couple of small holes in the filter with a small phillips head screwdriver and catch the oil with the 2 liter bottle half, then remove it entirely.

It's called the Sure Drain sytem and I have one installed on my truck. I love it. I've done a few oil changes with it already and I've not had any problems with it. You can pick it up at Walmart for about $12. It comes with a tube. I never use it because I don't have a skid plate. Take a look and see if it's something that you might find useful. The 4.7 uses P/N SD-2

DemonDakota,
I think that he said "any" information
would be appreciated.

Steve,
Go to a Marine supply/repair shop and tell
them about your oil drain problems and ask them
if they have a remote oil drain line.
I had one that I used on a 413 Dodge V-8 engine
in a motorhome.
They were available in lengths of one to four
feet and cost about $20.00

I am a tech at a Dodge dealer and we do alot of oil changes. The 4.7 Dak/Durangos suck. All we use is a piece of cardboard about a foot long and 6 in. wide to devert oil to the drainpan. Works OK It is a little more tricky ont the ones equipped with the worthless plastic skidplate.
