Subject: Right rear turn vibration IP: Logged
Message: Hi all.
When I make a sharp right hand turn, the right rear of the truck seems to "vibrate" or "chatter" thru the turn. I'm not really sure how to accurately describe this. Back end kinda "shakes" I guess. It ONLY happens in sharp right turns. Never on a left turn, no matter how sharp. It only gets worse the more power I apply. If I coast thru a sharp right, it doesn't do it.
I fear there is damage being done to the rear differential.
Tires are exactly the same wear and mileage.
I'm not sure this is related, but on even mildly wet roads, the rear end fishtails out on LEFT turns, while it stays more firmly planted on right turns. Strange?
I'm kinda worried, and not sure how to explain this all to a dealer. Truck is still under warranty.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!

Message: Just some thoughts:
1) Do you have the limited slip(LSD) rear end? Maybe it's worn out, or friction modifier wasn't added for the clutches.
2) Could be the side gears are worn/damaged inside diff.
3) Incorrect backlash between pinion and ring-gear in rearend.
This is really only a starting point. You should open up rear diff. or have someone do it for you, major damage may be occuring.

Message: Thanks for the input Jeffro.
I'll be making yet another appointment with the dealer.
I've had nothing but problems with this truck. Especially with the tranny. It's been pulled twice in 25k miles to be repaired. Numerous other problems have kept it at the dealer.
I really thought Chrysler had their $hit together this time. My bad.

Message: Hey Noah,
That really doesn't sound right at all. I'd take it straight into the dealer since it's under warranty.
Sorry about the bad luck with the tranny. Dakotas have been notorious for crappy trannies for years, although the new gen Daks have greatly improved and seem relatively reliable. Not to say that Chrysler doesn't put out plenty of lemons every year. Sorry you got a bad one.
Good luck with the rear differential problem (if that's what it is and keep us posted on the fix.
Later.
