Message: Brian said "LOL...i'd like to see a 4.7 revving to 7k nonstop. Can picture the big oil spill"
WHy do you say that? As if the other two Magnum V8's were built for that stock as well???
They put a lower rev limiter on the later model 5.2's than they do the 4.7 so I don't think they were worried about it being over reved.
It's a pretty tight engine with better tolerances than the 5.2/5.9 with a windage tray, bedplate, and everything. With good valve springs the 4.7 could rev to 7k easy. I wouldn;t hold ANY near stock engine at 7k for a long period. That would be pointless.

Message: For those that haven't a clue, My '02 Dak with the 4.7L and the Kenny Belle Optimizer II would turn up to 7,200 RPM and bounce off the rev limiter with out any problem.
Had a Chivy guy tell me it would blow up if I did that so I did it for him and held it there for 60 Seconds bouncing off of 7,200 rpms with out any issues. Oh Yeah, totally stock internals, do that with a 5.9, 5.2L Stock internals.

Message: Ok....the 4.7 has many benefits over the 318. I have the 318. My 318 has never lost to a 4.7L due to my lower weight truck. The 4.7 is a smaller engine with smaller displacement. 4.7L comes from the factory putting out more of it's potential power then the 318 did. The 318 is tamed a lot more than the 4.7. 318 has more potential power and YES I have saw a 318 go to 8krpm.(Racing engine). NOTHING STOCK, DO NOT TRY AT HOME!! LOL. Speaking of the 360....every time I have dealt with one it seems to use a REDICULOUS amount of gas while producing only a slight edge over the 318. 360 isn't even practical these days with the gas prices. Neither is the 318. My 318 gets about 14-20. On the other hand, my 2004 Neon SRT-4 gets like 24+. I'd like to see a Dakota race that.............. I don't normally like to race a 4 cylinder but that's one that can kick.

Prolly not.
But we need bigger tachs.
The tach in my truck only goes to 6K and the needle stops, then I shift.

Message: LOL too funny.
While on a dyno you see the power drop after 5500 or so, we can still feel it "pull" until it SLAMS into the limiter.
When stock mine would hit the 6000 ~ 6200 limiter before I could really feel it was time to shift (when shifting manually for fun).
With my limiter now 6500 ~ 6700 or so I now can feel it drop power and then shift before I hit the limiter.
Still, my truck WILL pull descent to the 6500+ limiter with a pretty STOCK engine.
And I think the 4.7 is NOT tuned for high revs as far as the intake goes. They seemed to have designed it for mid range power. I think the Chevy 4.8 favors the upper revs for power than the 4.7 Dodge. But as a TRUCK engine goes that's not always the best thing. I bet if Dodge would have tuned the 4.7 for higher revs, you would see something over 250HP easy with the same engine. Probably more.
According to allpar.com, the 4.7 shares a lot of the technolodgy of the SRT4's 2.4 if that means anything.
When I get mine running in my Duster, we'll see how that thing pulls in a car :)

Message: I hate to say this......Dakotas are quick trucks, but they are not that quick compared to the newer cars, it doesnt matter what you have stock, a 3.9, 5.2, or a 4.7 or even a 360. Unless you have your truck madly souped up, you cannot launch 5000+ LBS steel very fast. The 408 guy is a different story. 318 is more powerful than the 4.7. The 4.7 IS more efficient by a good margin. The 4.7 IS NOT a HEMI in any way. The 4.7 DOES benefit by having OHC design. I have worked on both. Both have their benefits. 318 has more untapped potential than the 4.7, the 4.7 still benefits from tighter clearances. I could go on and on and on. I cannot honestly say I prefer either the 5.2 or the 4.7 over each other.

Message: Racing isn't about how far the tach can go, it's about how much power you are getting in the RPM band. As long as you can run out each gear to about 5,800 you are fine. My 318 has done that probably 100's of times. Why would you want to continue upping your RPM's past 6k if your engine produces about 20% less power past 6k? Hurry the F**k up and shift and get back into your torque/hp curve range. My Camaro 0-60's slower if I push it to 7,500. If I shift at 6k, it is about a half a second faster because my curve drops at 6.5k.

Message: your comparing a stock 318 to a modded 4.7L. A 318 has more cubic inches so more potential power is there. And about this thread, the 360 will KILL the 4.7 with the same mods. There's no replacement for DISPLACEMENT!!!!!!. NONE!!!! ZERO, ZAP!, ZILCH!. A stock 318 IS more powerful than a 4.7.

Message: To be honest. Duner spends most of his time with his Supercharged 5.9 R/T these days. It is in the high 11's. I've seen him race it.
But his 4.7 was in the mid 12's and he still towed with it too, so that has to be impressive as well.
I tow over 7,000 Lbs with my truck sometimes. So I'm happy it can do that without dying :p
It's the only engine they had for a V8 when I bought it and I'm happy with it so that's cool.
