Thinking about changing the thermostat. Where is it located and how easy is it to change? As far as difficulty, how does it compare to changing the engine oil? Thanks.

Not that hard. The thermostat housing is located just under the alternator (passenger side, attack it from below). No gasket, its on o-rings. I just unbolted it and caught the antifreeze in a clean pan, switch out the therm paying attention to the direction it points. I used the Robertshaw 180 degrees hi-flow (Autozone #GT-755, $5) BUT, I have heard when it comes to smog check time you got to put the 190 back in to get the operating temp back up to burn off the hydrocarbons. I actually found it easier than changing the oil, especially thru the skid plates...antifreeze is easier to clean up than oil! I got tricks now for changing the oil, but thats a whole other story...

Good luck. My lower bolt broke when I did mine (a 2000). I would spray it with an werokroil or WD40 for a couple days before hand.

But otherwise easy enough to do.

What is the benefit of changing the thermostat to a lower temp setting. Does it give you more HP, better gas milleage or what?
