Subject: 318 camshafts IP: Logged
Message: Hey, I just found the cam card in my basemen this evening and was amazed to see the specs on it. I put it in blindly because my machinist told me it would make some massive power for the street. I've got a 318(swapped) 95 dak 9.5:1 compression KB aluminum pistons, cam, p&p tb, cat and muffler, msd, electric fans.
Comp Cams grind # crs262hr-12
Intake Exhaust
.480 .512 lift
262 264 duration at .006 tappet lift
206 210 duration at .050
112 lobe separation
108 intake centerline
I don't know about the centerline and separation, but it seems to me that 480 and 512 is a helluva lot of lift for a street motor.
What do you guys think about this? should the cam go, or should I change my intake or get headers to help out with air/fuel flow?
Thanks, Geoff

Message: That's a sweet cam for a 318. I think you'll be happy with it. It's definitely not too much cam for a daily driver. Have fun.

Message: That should be fine! I do not start getting hesitant until I hit 272@.550 and above in a small block for street use. Once you get to .282 and above you will normaly get raw gas flowing out the tail pipes.

Message: Thanks for the info guys. It's still kind of strange the way this truck drives, I think the v-6 I pulled out was faster untill 4500 rpms at that point my v8 will outrun a z-28 That doesn't help to much though, because my stock pcm cuts it out at 5200. I just started my freshman year of college, so I can't afford a mp computer for my truck.
I did have a set of headers on my v6 which helped out quite a bit and I haven't found a set for my 8 thats under $500.
Thanks again

Message: You need headers. You should be able to get Gibson's for around $325 or so. That's what I'm running in my '95 318 truck.

Message: A lot of people have told me that the stock exhaust manifolds flow pretty well. I believe they are from a 96 ram which isn't as good as the 93 or so but still not too bad. Should I do headers before an intake manifold or PCM?
I just started looking for a job here on campus so hopefully I can start doing some more mods to the dak in the next few months.

Message: In order, I would do the PCM, the exhaust, and then the intake manifold. Your stock PCM is probably having trouble coping with a bigger cam. You've already helped the intake side with an air intake and a throttle body. Do the headers first to open up the exhaust side a little more, then an M-1 intake.

Message: I agree, that the pcm would help out with higher fuel flow and advance the timing, but my cam didn't effect the vaccum at all. I hooked the engine up to a Snap-On scope in my shop class last year. The scope included a vaccum wavefore that showed it at a consistent 18"hg at idle. My teacher was really surprised and how much there was because of the work I did to the motor.
I also checked the ignition waveform just for fun, it was pretty cool. You could see the 4 consecutive spark plug firings because of the MSD ignition. I thought it would have been one consecutive spark but either way, my fuel economy went up.
I'm not sure what I said about the air intake, but all I did was put on a 6" open air element on top of the tb eliminating the factory cool air intake. This made a noticable increase in power when the engine is cold, but I think that when it warms up it is a bit slower.
Where can I find a PCM for a reasonable price? I used to work for a dealer, but I quit when school started so I no longer have my employee discount on MP parts.
Well, that's all I have for now so any other advice is appreciated.

Message: The PCM is a P5249545 for a 95 318 auto. Earnhardt Dodge has it for $234.
www.parts4mymopar.com
That's the best price I've seen from a vendor I've never heard anything bad about.
I am running a Ram 360 computer on my 318 and it seems to like it. It works fine and by running the Ram pcm, you get even more advance. That's a P5249546 for a 95 360 Auto.

Message: What do the rest of you think about a 360 a/t ram pcm? Does it use the same wiring harness?
Thanks for the tip and the link, i'll look into that
