Subject: autolite spark plugs
IP: Logged

Message:
I'm going tochange the plugs in my98 5.2dak. Are autolite's really as good as everyone says. Also, the book say I'm supposed to have 5224's for my truck. Everyone on the website say to go with the 3923's. What's the difference and are they worth it?

3923's are colder than the 5224's. Opinions vary.

I used the 5224s in my trunk, because I tend to go by the book. The stock plugs were pinging when going up steep inclines at high RPMs before the change. I was climbing hills at 70 mph in the Sierra Nevada yesterday and no pinging was noticed. I think most people on this board who use 3923s have a bunch of mods on their truck. My truck is basically stock, so I went with the 24s.

2001 4.7L CC zero mods, unless a K&N dropin and synthetic oil are mods

If you have lowered the operating temperature of your truck by swapping out the thermostat for the Robertshaw 180 degree hi-flow thermostat (AutoZone part # GT-755) then use the 3923 Autolite Spark plugs. If you are still operating at 190 degrees with the stock thermostat use the 5224's. For information on performance gains when using the lower thermostat see the SpeadTweaks website.

Stay away from Autolites!!! They are junk!! Better yet put them in a Ford. Bosch Platniums and NGK double platniums are much better. If you have to have an American made plug go with A/C Delco double platnium.

Sorry Sandman, you are wrong. If you don't mind wasting your hard earned money on platinums, thats fine, but time after time people who have used the Autolites have reported numerous advantages at a fraction of the cost of those platinum plugs. To prove it to yourself, spend a whopping $7.16 on 8 Autolite plugs, compared to the $23.92 for 8 platinums and you will notice that the Autolites will give you smoother power, easier starting and last longer than those platinums for 1/3 the price. Trust me, I've been there and done that!

donpeter, your attitude is surely the result of worn out oem sparkplugs. I can understand your frustration with having a hard to start automobile. I can imagine your anger at having to spend more at the pump than other motorists due to decling fuel economy. You must feel left behind at the stoplight when other motorists pull away from your truck because you are not getting the full performance from your engine.

However, you can have a whole new outlook on life and brighten your days by installing a fresh set of Autolite ignition engineered sparkplugs. Then you will be able to smile when you pass not only other motorists with improved pep and performance but the gas pump as well.
You will be happier and more at ease when you don't have to waste time starting your truck on cold mornings.

From bumper to tailight, you are always right with Autolite!

I upgraded to Autolite and put in the 3923's. My truck is running outstanding. I did as well put in a 180 degree thermostat. She runs cooler, more top end. Don't put platniums in your truck! They foul alot sooner then copper tips and cost twice as much. Go to speedtweaks.net and read the tips and tricks.
Just ask your parts counter for Autolite 3923's copper tips. Don't even bother telling them what make/model vehical, it dosn't show on the application list. It's a colder plug then you oem plugs.

I just changed the plugs in my 2000 4.7 Quad Cab (30000 miles), and I used the autolite 5224 plugs. I can't really tell a difference. Runs just the same as it did with the stockers. I don't really think a spark plug is gonna give you a performance gain.
