Message: Hey I just wanted to know if someone could explain which parts are which on an aftermarket and stock exaust setup. So you have the manifold, then some pipes, then that cats, then the exit pipes right? .. what are each of those "pipe" sections called, and when you say dumped .. does that mean killing the cats? .. for x and y pipes, I can understand why they are called x,y but do the cats come before or after the intersections? Reason I'm asking so much is I just got a 2k R/T CC and want to go with a nice setup but before I do I want to understand it fully. Thanks everyone!

Message: OK, here are the basics from engine back, someone please correct my naming if I am wrong:
Manifolds (factory), headers (aftermarket): Attach to cylinder heads, one per head these lead to the ->
Y-Pipe: This is the pipe that connects the 2 manifolds to run into a single pipe. On some newer ('00+) trucks have "Precats" on this pipe.
Precat: a small catalytic convertor. On vehicles so equipped there is 2 of them, one on each side of the Y-Pipe with an oxygen sensor both before and after each one.
Y-pipe runs to the Catalytic convertor.
The Cat then runs to the intermediate pipe.
Intermediate Pipe (mid-pipe): Piece of tubing between the catalytic convertor and the muffler.
The intermediate pipe then goes to the muffler and out from the muffler is the tailpipe.
Improtant things to look at when figuring out exhaise systesm are if they are welded or clamped, there are hi-flow cats, aluminized and stainless pipe, etc...
this is another area where you get what you pay for.
Hope this helps at least a little.

Message: what seems to be the most popular setup? What does true duals mean? Which is the premium and which do you get the most bang for the buck? Thanks so much for the help!

Message: Hey Pixel,
Do as much to the intake as you can, Throttle body, cold air intake, maybe even the M-1 Intake Manifold which replaces your stock (it looks like a beerkeg that sits underneath your throttle body). Then spring for the exhaust, if you do it in that order you'll see better gains than if you went w/ the exhaust first.
Then it just depends on what your going for as far as exhaust goes...true duals is more for people w/ alot of modifications to their truck and is pushing alot of air in and out of their truck, for example people w/ heads, cam, nitrous or a supercharger. If your going for all out sound get a catback system...that usually just splits the pipes from one pipe to 2 after the muffler.
Hope that helps!
