Subject: gears vs. bolt-ons IP: Logged
Message: I have a '02 R/T and have only added exhaust and air intake. I want more off-idle power and low end take off. Im not concerned with top end speed, just want more "jump". I had an old hot rod mechanic tell me that the best investment for my needs is gears. The r/t's come with 3.55's and he said to get 3.92's.....should I invest my $$ in intake manifold, 50mm TB, cam, ignition, ect. or gears ? Also is the PCM flash worth the money. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have no idea what Im doing.

From what I can understand, alot the guys with stock 3.92's are going to 4.56 gears. If your gonna go to the expense of changing gears, better make it work your while. So in your case with 3.55's I guess 4.10's would be your best bet.

I have the 3:92's on my 4.7 5-spd...1st gear is hardly used as is.
With 4:56's in there, I imagine I could probably get 7mph at 5,500rpm in first gear...hehe
Stay with the 3:92's in the R/T... Just add the go-fast goodies.

Message: notchlx,
The r/t's have the 4 spd auto with a first gear equal to the 5spd's 2nd. 4.56's with the auto is tamer than the 5spd with 3.21 gears. The rear gear ratio would have to be 2.78 with the 5spd's first gear(4.01) to be the same. With the auto's bigger OD gearing of .69 vs. .729 for the 5spd his rpm's will only be 225 rpm's higher than the 5spd with 3.92 gears at 60mph.
