Subject: dual or not 2 dual IP: Logged
Message: I have been looking at a lot of threads & there seems to be a discrepency between having catback duals, or high flow mufflers with single out. I am try to make a decision on which way to go. I certainly don't want to lose any torque or horses.
The only mods I have done so far are K&N drop in, robert shaw 180 T stat, Autolites 3923's, fully synthetic oil for engine, transfer cases. Any help in what type of exhaust to go with would be greatly apprciated.

Message: Unless you are going to turbo or get a blower you should probably just get an aftermarket muffler welded in place of the stock one. Maganflow 12256 is the aluminized I believe and 14256 is the Stainless Steel version that will weld in place. In your case remove the third cat (you have no O2 sensor on this cat) and do the above mentioned. If it doesn't "look" aftermarket enough for you then put a tip on it. Some people who have posted on this board have had luck with duals but that is only because they have other extensive mods such as cams/intake, large throttle body, flashed computer, etc.
My truck is a '00 4.7L 5spd 3.92's CC SLT LSD 2wd
3923's
180t-stat
68mm Fastman TB
360intakez
carsound cat 2.5"
next is a magnaflow muffler #14256
then the active suspension setup. I need more control on wet roads down here in Florida. Then probably a hurst shifter.

Message: HI, I installed a flowmaster SUV Perf muffler, single in and two 2 1/2 out. It did hurt the very bottom end but above 3000 it really helped. I have since made my own homebrew intake and that enhances the exhaust.
You don't need the bottom end, why spin your tires, get the power when you want it, mid range!
And gas mileage went up!

Message: CThomp,
Did that carsound cat help at all on the butt dyno?

Message: Before I got the cat I already had the other mods listed. The acceleration was awesome but the engine would occasionally hesitate and even felt "clogged". The cat opened it up like a champ. There is no more hesitation and no more "clogged" feeling. So yes, I felt a huge difference on the butt dyno.

Message: Good, I am looking at my dyno graph from this weekend and the HP curve is a nce increasing line until peak at 4400 RPM, then is basically levels off, dropping slightly until it hits 5400 where it drops like a rock. I am thinking either intake or exhaust is choking me betweek 4400 and 5400...
I am already planting the seed with the wife that this needs to be done in the spring...

Message: It's a pretty inexpensive mod. Cat was $90 from speedtweaks.net and I'm gonna get a gibson or magnaflow muffler from truckperformance.com. It just depends on which muffler is quietest. I'm into power not loudness.
Do you have any mods right now?

Message: I have the following:
HO Cams & Intake
180 thermostat
K&N homebrew (it is a quick D) (3" tube)
bosch +4 plugs
gibson catback (quiet inside, loud outside)
home prted 68mm TB
IAT relocated and IAT adjuster box installed
rear end and tranny use redline synthetic
viscous fan removed
Dyno'd last weekend (with a shortbelt) at 229.4hp @ 4400, 301.7 lb-ft @ 3600.
So I think i can improve on this with more flow on both sides.

Message: Definitley get the carsound cat. It's cheap and you'll like it. I'm gonna do the ho cams and intake down the line some. After the muffler i'm gonna do an ASP pulley and hurst shifter. I have the money to do it just not the time to get to the shop.

Message: Keep me updated on the ASP pulley, this is something I have been looking at for a while. As for teh carsound cat did you clamp it or weld it? Doesn't emissions require it be welded? I am thinking I want to replace all 3 cats with carsound cats.

Message: I've got true equal length custom duals, and I lost absolutely nothing on low end. Still spins tires like an SOB. The dyno before I added HO Cams and Intake and the IAT mod was 208 RWHP and just under 270 RWTQ. I know the HO Cams and Intake added a good bit of power, and the IAT makes a great difference, but more so in the summer down here in GA.
K&N Drop in AF True Dual exhaust and removed third cat HO Cams & HO Intake Modified TB Autolite 3923 Plugs TPS @ .76 VDC IAT Adjuster Mod

Message: a single 3 inch would probably outflow dual 2 1/2s and make more power because each cylinder is now essentially tied together which balances out exhaust pulses kinda like an x pipe. the 3 inch also has less surface area creating less drag on the outgoing gases. but nothing sounds better than properly set up duals.
