Subject: Headlights! IP: Logged
Message: My damn headlights stopped working tonight. I checked my high beams, they worked fine. I tested the bulbs to make sure they were ok, the low beam and the high beam tested fine. Im thinking it might be the headlight switch. When i pull it once, the parking lights come on, then when i pull it again the headlights should come on, but they dont. Last night they worked fine, tonight they dont. I was doing some throttle body work earlier today, but i doubt i touched anything.

Message: mine did the same last weak...
i put on the high beams, they worked...
i heald back the thing instead of just clicking it back to the highbeam spot, then let go, and my headlights started working again...
but i just noticed last night my foglights arent working, and i know they were working earlier that day, both of them out, so i dont think it was just bulbs...

Message: well i just replaced the headlight switch. On my truck i dont have the foglight feature. What i would do is get an ohm meter and test to see if your getting voltage to the foglight switch itself. if you are, then see if theres voltage coming out of the switch. If theres voltage coming out, then go to the light assembly itself and see if the bulbs are getting voltage. It there not then you have a wiring problem or something is shorting out. Theres only three things that can go bad, bad switch, bad wiring to the lights or power wiring to the switch, or you have bad bulbs. Ohh yeah, and another thing you should see if you didnt blow any circuit breakers or fuses.

Message: My $$ is on the headlight switch. I've replaced mine twice so far since I've had my dak in the last 5 years. Before you go looking for voltage at the switch, it would be easier to start right at the headlight: Pop the hood disconnect the headlight plug, check for volts +, and also Ground. Chances are you won't have the voltage. Then go after the switch. The reason I say this, the headlight plug will take you 60-120 seconds(depending on skill level) to have in your hand, the headlight switch takes 5-20 minutes(depending on skill level) to have in your hand.

Message: I am starting to think It is a common problem with our dakotas. I have a 99 R/T and two weeks after I bought It from the dealership (used) it went on me. Just the foglight part of the switch. It seems to me that these kind electrical promblems shouldn't happen this frequently, I only had 15k miles on my truck when it went. Don't you think it should be a recall or something.

Message: Hey Noodlz, I dont think it should be a recall. Switches go all the time, they really dont have a life span. Ive had switches go real quick, then some that still work and my truck is a 92. Hopefully you wont have any others go. Sometimes they can be a bitch to replace!
