Subject: Truck Dies at idle!
IP: Logged

Message:
starting today my truck seems to want to die at idle. Earlier today i put some gas in, it was fine. Then later tonight i filled the tank and it started dying at idle. Im thinking its a bad batch of gas. If not, what might be going on. Please help!

I dont know about dakotas but, my 94 dodge ram had
an idle solenoid ( I think this is what it is called) go bad and it wouldn't idle unless I had my foot on the gas. Once I replaced the solenoid the truck idled fine. Hope this helps.

What year and engine is it? I have a '92 5.2L. I've had problems with idling in the past.

Symptoms:
Stall when putting into reverse.
Stall when RPMs come down after revving it up.
Cause:
Carbon build-up in the throttle body and by the Idle Air Control Valve (which is mounted in/on the throttle body).

I would try cleaning out the throttle body. Removing it from the engine and using a Carb/Choke Cleaner or Throttle Body Cleaner would give you the best results. A can of C/C Cleaner is a lot cheaper than getting diagnostics done. :) And it's something easy to try.

The IAC valve (Idle Air Control Valve) is almost certainly the problem. My truck did the same thing. First clean the throttle body with carb cleaner, then put some high octane fuel in your truck w/ some fuel injection cleaner, then pull the IAC valve out (it's located on the back of the throttle body) and check it if it looks fairly clean put it back in if it has alot of carbon build up on, naturally replace it, but make sure you clean out the spot where the IAC valve goes out with some cleaner. That should take care of your problem.

Well i cleaned the throttle body, it was BAD! Now its all pretty again. Seems like it did alot, the truck hasnt died yet and it seems that the idle has smoothed out. I guess ill see what it does in the next couple days, if it dies again im going to replace the Idler control unit. Thanks for the help!
