My 99 dakota pings constantly. I tried gas, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, t-stat. Nothing works. The local dodge dealer offered to reload my computer. I have heard some horror stories about that. Any Ideas?

I know how you feel. I have a knock problem too. Have you tried octane booster? That's kind of an expensive solution though. I don't see how some people can run 9lbs of boost and not have pinging while some people have it under stock conditions. All I can tell you is what I'm going to do to try to stop mine. I'm putting in colder spark plugs, a water injection system, and I may get one of those split second ARC2's to have more control over my a/f ratio. I will never take it to the dealer for this problem because of the flash you mentioned. One cause of pinging that is difficult to check is deposits in your combustion chamber that can become hot spots.

When I mentioned my pinging problem to Kenne Bell they said the only octane booster that's any good is NOS off road formula. Maybe that would help.

i have a 95 grand cherokee and it would ping under load or when towing. i found out through a jeep website that a lower plenum pan gasket is weak and a stronger is availiable. I replaced the gasket and that took care of the problem!!

Follow the TSB for rerouting the spark plug wires, we did it on my friends fullsize with a 318. It used to ping extremly bad under load, no it virtually gone.

what exactly is the TSB on rerouting the spark plug wires? DO you use a different firing order or are the wires just moved?
Thanks

Go to dealership and have them change the disributor sync to 6. It is probably set in the 0 to -6 range which can cause it be weak and ping. I had a Tech tell me the other day that having it set from 0 to -6 will cause it to ping. They just perform better period if set at 6.
Use some good fuel injector cleaner like STP Complete Fuel Injector Treatment afterwards to clean any carbon deposits in the combustion camber and off the top of the pistons.
You say you have already installed colder plugs like Autolites 3923's or 3922's and have installed a 180 thermostat.
My Dakota that I have now when I first bought it would ping almost all the time even under light acceleration. It really got on my nerves so much that I would try to accelerate at a slow enough rate as to not have the engine ping. It was almost impossible. It does not have that problem now after making the above changes along with replacing the cap, rotor, and wires. I use 3922's but as yet have not replaced the 195 thermostat. I don't recall hearing any pinging at all for the longest time now.
