Message: Hi I was thinking about buying a Dakota, 97-99. I want a V8, auto, club cab 4x4. I noticed that when I checked the otw rating on a stock Dakota, Autotrader said it would do 4000lbs, but when I chekced my '03 brouchere, it said it would pull 6100lbs with certain accesories and options.I would def. add a transcooler and shift kit. Any ideas? Also, how reliable are these trucks? My dads 96 Ram 1/2 ton 4x4 spun a converter at 52k miles and grenaded the tranny, just while drving down the street. Thanks

Message: The 6100 lb tow rating for the 03 Dakota is probably the 5.9L, 3.92 axle ratio, 2WD flavor. Dodge computes tow ratings by taking the GCWR and subtracting the vehicle weight and then subtracting 150 lbs for the driver. The GCWR is listed inside the driver's door somewhere and takes into account engine size, axle ratio, etc. The Dodge website now lists Dakota tow ratings in detail. It probably has the combination that you are looking for (or at least close, ie 4.7L vs 5.2L). The tranny cooler is a definite must.
