Message: I have had my used Timberline Pearl 2003 Quad cab 4X4 5.9L for a week. It had 6,000 miles on it when I got it last Saturday. It came from factory with the heavy duty towing package. Only mod so far that I have done is to put a K&N filter in to replace the paper filter. I filled up today after driving back and forth to work, a mix of city and highway and had 212 miles on it. It took 14.44 gallons of gas to fill up. The came to 14.7 miles per gallon. My 2000 Dakota V8 club cab 2X4 got about 1 to 2 more miles per gallon under these same conditions. I am satisfied. My 1995 Dakota v8 got about the same as this 2003. Did not get a window sticker on this new truck since it was used so don't know what the sticker might have said about the gas mileage. Now considering FM TB, M1 intake, flowmaster muffler, and possibly high flow cat. Oh, the upside is I can now seat 4 - 5 grown adults and have 4 doors instead of that silly excuse of a backseat in the club cab, yuck. And this truck is faster than either of the two previous Dakotas I have owned.

Message: From my experiences, the biggest factor is the way you drive. I have an 01 4.7 V8 4x4 RC with no mods. On the same 110 mile stretch of highway, I have gotten 14.6 MPG as well as 22.2 MPG The first run I had the tailgate up, cruise on 80. The second time; tailgate was down, checked the air in the tires, cleaned out air filter, didn't even use cruise control (it likes to jump to about 2500 -3000 RPM going up hills) and sustained a steady speed of about 55-60 MPH. Also, I slowly picked up speed before reaching the bottom of hills so I could let off on the way up. With the EPA sticker saying 18 mpg for highway, I was very pleased to see 22.2

Message: I have a 03 quad cab with a 4.7. I was running gas with methanol and getting aprox 16 on the interstate running 75-80 mph. On the advice of a friend I stopped running any gas with methanol and my MPG went up to aprox 18. I run mid grade fuel 87 octanes. After I made the switch I look in the owner’s manual it confirmed that you should not run gas with methanol. I honestly didn't think what gas I ran mattered but learned different.

Message: I got a 2000 Q-cab, used in 02 or 03 and had
remarkably bad gas mileage. Continuous 12mpg no
matter how I drove, where I drove, (it's my
hunting truck.. up and down mountain roads besides
daily driver) what kind of gas or octane.
Switched to synthetic oil in the factor rec weight
and the mileage went to 13. Big whoop! 3-4 years
ago started checking out tuners and bought a
Superchips Flashpaq (evidently discontinued) and
programmed it for "mileage 87 octane". I had been
using Chevron Supreme 92 just to keep it clean, so
tank was full of high octane. Well, boy, howdy
hello! On the way to work the next day the
overhead console mileage readout went from 12 to
16.7 in 25 miles. Hmmmmm! On the next hunting
trip over the mountains with gear and my two boys,
#1 pipes up in the middle of the pass "Hey Dad,
look at your mileage!" 20mpg! I think what
happens is the tuner unlocks the timing advance so
that it will advance against the knock sensor and
dramatic mileage increase is the result. Now, 18-
20mpg is the norm. Unfortunately, I bought a 05
Jeep CRD which gives 30mpg on pump diesel and 24
on Biodiesel. Sorry, the Dakota sits in the
driveway for the commute but does all the hunting
and heavy lifting. It's still all in the MOPAR
family, though. Recently had the CRD in the shop
for a T-belt (GAG!)and started playing with the
Dakota tuner again. Switched to the "92 octane
performance" tune and in town mpg dropped to 14-15
but the right foot response is certainly different
and it sounds quite different! I'll play some
more.
I think a tuner is the way to go.

Message: I've had my 4.7 Dakota (2wd club cab sport)now for 12.5 years. I bought it new and now it has 185,000 KM or 115,000 Miles on it. I usually drive it fairly hard and got about 15 mpg then and get the same now. Probably can urge it up to 17 if I take it real easy on the highway. Around 8 years ago I added a K&N filter, and put in a throttle body spacer. Then I put on cat-back exhaust. It sounds cooler and I don't remember any change in mileage. I'm sure this engine would last another 10 yrs but the body probably won't.
