Forget the milage floor it and have fun. I opted for the 7 year 100,000 mile optional warranty b/c I have two other vehicles and drive about 2 thousand miles a year. I`ll get 7 years of warranty..!

I believe the 5.9's economy is poop compared to the 4.7. Correct me if I'm wrong, but my 5.9 doesn't know the word "fuel economy". It spills petrol into the motor as fast as the Exxon Valdez spilling into the ocean.

Trying to make up my mind whether to buy this truck at a local dealer. Dodge dak.2000,extcab,4x4 4.7, new duals,hard tonneu,bug shield, visor,rainguard,light covers,everythings black, loaded to the hilt inside $18000
Oh yeah, original owner a girl and just has 16000
miles cleanest truck I've ever seen save for brand new...sound good to you guys???

Sounds nice but I'd try to talk him down a couple grand. I've heard duals might not be best idea on 4.7. Try to talk to her to see if it really was female owned and why it was traded in.

True Duals for these 4.7's are supposed to be counter-effective because these engines work on backpressure and if you free up almost all backpressure with a flow-free system such as true dual, it works against the engine. Now if you have a stock bent single pipe, just larger, all the way back to the muffler then you go to two pipes, it shouldn't be bad.

I drive main free ways in Dallas all the time, I-35, 183, 635 etc... I drive with a very heavy foot, 80 - 90 mph average range, and I average about 14 to 16 on the free ways depending on the weather. I am also always first off the red light, my over all average on gas is 12 to 13.5 miles per gallon, but, that also includes sitting for loooooonnnnnngggg periods of time in traffic jams.

I have the 4.7 V8 with auto trans. The weather up here just got about 10 degrees warmer and now im getting around 15 mpg is this normal. Its been about 10-20 degrees here now it is 25-40 degrees.

Myth, myth, and more myth. Backpressure is not some constant thing that is always there. Velocity of exiting gasses has just as much to do with backpressure as the size of the exhaust pipe. If you do intake work, TB work, and then exhaust work on the 4.7L, you will gain significant HP and TQ at the wheels, and have a better engine response as well. The reason you will gain is that the velocity of the exiting gas goes UP, not down. That means more backpressure, and that means more TQ. Doing JUST THE EXHAUST "could" cause a slight drop in the low RPM TQ levels, but it won't really effect it in the upper RPM ranges (in fact, it might increase). Are you really worried by your idle RPM TQ? Can you even use your idle RPM TQ? I've gotten better gas mileage with all my mods than when it was stock. I also make more power than when I was stock. Before I put the HO parts in, I dynoed at 207.x RWHP and 268.x RWTQ. That was with the CAI, 3923's, true dual exhaust, and IAT mod. I'm an automatic, so that's why my torque looks a bit low. If you've got a manual, then your TQ/HP will be higher (but not by much). Since that dyno I've added the HO Cams and Intake, gotten a new TB, and just purchased a KB Optimizer II setup to run N/A before I go blown. I might even splurge and go with the FAST ignition control system for the 4.7L. Please stop spreading myths about what you have not even performed on your own vehicles. I've performed and tested. When I go back to the dyno again in March, I'll post the much higher HP/TQ results.

i have a bone stock 2002 5.9l 4x4 quad cab automatic; highway i get 14 mpg with the tailgate down although it has been as low as 9 mpg, seriously abysmal fuel economy

that being said i wouldn't trade my dakota for a lot full of fords and a couple of chevs thrown in .. i love my dakota

i have been considering a cat back exhaust, free flow air intake/filter and possibly a chip with a view to saving the planet's dwindling resources while still keeping that "a-ticket" ride .. any suggestions ???

What you're talking about is called Bernoule's principal. Its about how gasses expansion and comppression and also velocity changes ar due to changes in pressure due to the increase or decrease in dia. of the tubing. It's simple the smaller the tube the faster the gas has to flow the larger it is the more lazy it gets. But as you said this has to be taken into consideration with the engine size as it is nothing more than an air pump. You inprove it's ability to pump air in efficiently and you don't make the right changes to the exhaust and it's all for nothing! That's why some times the same engine will make more power with a good exhaust than it will with just open headers. There's scaveging to consider also were the exhaust flow from one cylinder or a bank of cylinders will actually aid in the exhaust flow from another by creating a negative pressure thus helping to purge that cylinder or cylinders of burned gasses more quickly and completely. It's not as simple as whacking off the exhast system and sticking a pare of 3" straight pipes to you're engine. My 5.9 started out averaging 12 to 13 mpg highway now I'm in the 15's and some times 16 mpg range. With just headers and a true 3" single pipe exhaust with a flowmaster and a supposed high flow cat. I also replace the Y pipe with a Bassani unit. The diameter difference between the stock Y pipe and the Bassani is pretty significant although the fit was'nt smooth by no means! I wished I could remember the dia's. The other thing that supprised me was the difference in size of the pipe between y pipe and the cat and the cat and the muffler. That's why I said it is now a true 3" exhaust. It's a R/T and pipe was smaller before the cat and after cat than it was from the muffler to the tip. It sounds much healthier now too. The only other two mods I've done are K&N filter and a throttle body spacer plate. RWHP 211 calculated with a Vericom performance computer. I had some throttle positiong issues at the time and have since replaced it. This alone has made the truck feel quite a bit more peppy. I've recently purchased a spare set of heads to port to make use of the exhaust improvements. A cam and a ported intake will also be on the list. I'm not to impressed with the cold air intakes yet especially since the dodge uses a throttle body that is in the same location as a traditional carb. I would think a functional cowl induction setup with a traditional K&N style filter would be much better than snaking a tube around the engine compartment!

We with the 4.7L's do have the functioning shaker hood. There are some other decent ram air style hoods out there as well (GTS hood comes to mind).

I say intall a 360 create motor and add a NV-4500 and be done with it. You'll have the meanest truck on the block.

I have a 2000 4.7 Dakota. I'm lookin for info on the condensation problem the 4.7's have and if there is a solution to the problem out there. I have this problem and lookin to fix it before it causes any damage.
